In our S60 3rd Edition Essentials Rafe and Steve pick the applications that you really need to install on your S60 3rd Edition smartphone. Of course everyone has a different opinion so be sure to leave your choice in the comment thread.
Read on in the full article.
OK Cool list, but there's still not a lot around. Before I make the jump I need eReader and Repligo, and according to both support sites, there is no plan to create 3rd edition versions. (Allthough Repligo is listed in your software section as 3rd edition compatible, the Repligo site says different)
I desperatley want a N93 or N80, but I cant be doing without eReader, unless anyone knows how I can read my collection of eReader books in some other application?

Well, I think the global search application "Mobile Search" by SEPT-Solutions is also a definite must-have 😊
There is no other way to find all your data on your device
And a file explorer. Y-Browser or Sysexplorer - only possible.
Thanks for the comments guys. I'll check on that compatibility information - provided by Handango / developers, but not always right it seems!
I do know eReader.com have given up on new Symbian development - a shrt sighted move in my eyes.
The mobile search is not available for the E series phones, according to the Nokia link in the article. Does anyone have an alternate source of that program that works on an E61?
Must have programs should include freeware like Calcium (calculator) and Google Maps. And I'd suggest Splash ID rather than Handy Safe. Splash ID works on PCs, Macs, Palm devices, series 3 Symbian, and now Blackberrys. I've used it for years and highly recommend it.
I agree with the above comment. I think GMM is the single most useful app available right now. Especially on these high end phones w/ Edge and HiRes screen. Mapping, Directions, Business Lookup, Phone # Info, Traffic, all in one elegent little java app. I just can't wait until it adds some GPS support.
My essential software other than what has mentioned already is
Autolock - does what it says on the tin
Handyclock, adds all the functions that should be built in, Multiple repeating alarms, Timers, Stopwatch/lap timer/Timelog etc
Profimail - better than the built in client and includes a good file manager
Mweather, not as comprehensive as Handy Weather but free
Agile Messenger
gdroth: Just use the download link for any of the other 3rd edition phones. I guess that a phone is "supported" means that the app has been tested on it.
I'm sure many more customers would love to be able to support AAS by purchasing apps through this site but us mugs who live in the UK get fleeced for VAT (this happens through many online stores - including mobipocket).
I imagine many people will tend to buy from the on-line stores that don't charge it. I'm assuming this is something you have no control of but it's a shame.
As a develop of Symbian, I think the new platform security solution is too inconvenient, not downward compatible, damn symbian sign always needed! you could notice that there is no a REAL file manager under Symbian 9 yet.
Actually, there may be little viruses and malwares under S60 3rd, but software will also shrink to a small amount, especially for freeware.
Ratkat:
Handyclock, adds all the functions that should be built in, Multiple repeating alarms, Timers, Stopwatch/lap timer/Timelog etc
For those wanting just repeatable alarms (that don't clog up the calendar & standby screen) epocware have released a cut down Handyclock called HandyAlarm.
Strangely, I could only find it on their mobile.epocware.com page.
I'd like to repeat the query above in regard to Nokia Search on the E61. I see the screenshots but I don't see the download. I tried downloading one for another S60 3rd Edition device but it wouldn't install because of compatibility issues.
Yeh, there isn't an official version for the E61, I ended up downloading quite a number of different versions before finding one that would work.
Sorry I can't remember which one did finally load ok. Just download em all to your PC & bluetooth them across until you find the one that works.
Pretty sure it was one of the N-Series versions...
I think you can get an E61 version via the Catlogs software on the E61.
Rafe,
I checked the catalog and still no Mobile Search for E61. As one of your essential must-have pieces of software it's unfortunate that it's not readily available. Anyone know of any links to it?
Hi,
I tried the N93 version and it worked... though it seems to have less options than I remember on my N70, it's still good to have it!
Thanks for all your helpses.
Heres my short list of other possible candidates:-
Calcium - the simplest, easiest user interface for a calculator ever
Worldmate - time, weather and currency info all rolled into one
Autolock - for slider phones, especially the N80
Agile Messenger (Beta) - IM client
Nokias Podcast (Beta) - works pretty well for downloading video/audio podcasts
Shozu (Beta) - image and video uploader
Just my 2 cents 😉
