New Firmware suitable for O2?

7 replies · 1,608 views · Started 21 August 2006

I spoke to my local Carphone Warehouse today about the latest upgrade and had a strange reponse.

They asked me what my service provider was as the firmware version was dependant on who this was.

My service provider is O2.

Is it correct that the firmware is so dependant?

Can anyone advise?

Neil

Did you buy the phone Sim Free? If you did then your service provider is basically Generic, as in factory Nokia version. If you got it on an O2 contract then your provider is O2.

Most people prefer to get the generic firmware installed

Hi

I bought the phone with an O2 contract.

Would Carphone Warehouse use the generic version?

Wirelessly posted (NOKIA 6630: NokiaN80-1/3.0 (4.0623.0.22) Series60/3.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

CPW do nothin but talk sh@t, theyr useless, if ur fone needs a SW update take it to independant nokia service center or flash it urself, iv noticed that the CPW has started doing branded o2 phones, they will not flash it to a generic version unless it already has generic firmware!

CPW are not talking sh@t, they are actually talking sense. The Version 4 firmware update is ONLY for the generic Nokia phones (unlocked). If you have O2 or Orange, there is no Version 4 firmware available at the moment that is branded for each provider.

Yes, you can flash your O2 phone with the generic version, but you will:

1. Lose any O2 look and feel and pre-installed apps (maybe not a bad thing)
2. Lose your warranty on the phone if you have a problem (definitely a bad thing). If O2 see you have flashed with generic Nokia firmware then thay have the right to refuse warranty repair.

I spoke to the Nokia Servcie Centre in Angel, London and they warned me against flashing my Orange N80 with the generic firmware update. They have had some complaints from people that have had subsequent problems with their handsets and Orange have refused to do anything under warranty. They said the Orange Version 4 update should be available in about three weeks.

Thanks for all the info I will check with Carphone Warehouse & O2 before I upgrade.

I will however slightly agree that the Carphone Warehouse is not the best place to go for advice which is why I was initially asking.

i see what u saying but if u have it reflashed with branded FW ur fone will NOT b as fast/responsive as a generic version, sum places will happily update it to a generic version under nokia warranty, y update to a branded FW wen u can update to a generic FW, theres a nokia servic center in WOLVERHAMPTON that updates using only generic FW, so orange/o2 cant say anything as its a proper nokia service center thats done the update! however if u got it updated to a generic FW outside of nokia cervice center then its a dif story!
