What's with Webviewer?

9 replies · 1,818 views · Started 04 December 2002

Has anyone tried (tried..i'm sure) but observed where u go when u type Google.com? Yes. Google allright! But google canada!! Why? No settings were set on google through phone now.
(I had erlier explicitly enabled cookies, and selected (Kannada) language tools and it was no problem accessing)

But, when using the phone first time after flashing, it's reaching www.google.CA. Why not google.COM?
Accessing google.com through Pc is just fine.

Any musings?

This is basically beacause of the way webviewer works. They use a gateway which the Java Midlet connect to and retrieves the web page in this format. So the Webviewers server might be colated in canada or somehting similar. Anyways I am sure it has to do something with their gateway.

i think it;s on the GOogle side

cos when i try to use google now with my computer

it will connect to Google new zealand

and if we use Webviever we will be using their proxy isn;t it ??

and Google will detect our proxy then load the page with the nearest server

I dont follow...??!?!

I am connecting to google with my PC and there is no google NZ or whatever, just Google 😊

Thanks Muffy. So my suspicions of the proxy gateway is true :-?
Was checking meanwhile, and there was a link to google.com at the end of the page and could access .COM
Thereafter, google.com took me to correct page.

Now disabled cookies, and .COM takes to .CA again.
This is now clear its most likely a Canadian (or nearabouts) gateway. And we have to forgo our cookies option to get the right sites?? :-?

Also, had been meaning to ask, What if...say..SAY... in a couple of months or a year, their gateway/proxy server is down or gone for good. What of our webviewers??

BOOM!

Dream on..... 😃 😃

However, I think its unlikely since they sold quite a few being the only web browser for mobile phones with java capability (except the 9210)

Speculating that far into the future is... i agree, excersice in waste. No offence to Reqwireless. It was only a supposition and a wild thought about measures in place. Afterall, 10$ is'nt going to pinch anyone too much, that too having used for sometime.
As regards the likelyhood of any such thing happening, erm.... Enron, Ansett.... are ... toooooooooo big (out of proportion but real) an example 😉
