If I search for "nokia service centre" in Google, I find this search page:
http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,94212,00.html
I uncheck everything except "Return & Repair Centres", and type, say "London" in the box and I get these results:
http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,94215,00.html?searchtext=london&returnrepair=on&x=14&y=9
Have I really found Nokia Service Centres? Can I really walk into Carphone Warehouse on Oxford Street and get my firmware upgraded?
This is possibly a dumb question, but it seems too easy and I'm skeptical...
Yes I think that you are right, some Carphone Warehouse's are official Nokia Service Centres. As to whether you can just walk in and get it done free I'm not too sure how that side of it works.
I did ring my local service centre today though, (I'm not too confident about attempting to flash it myself), and the guy there was helpful but seemed to think that he wouldn't be able to do my N80 because it was on Orange and he didn't think that he had the firmware for flashing an Orange phone to V4. He said he only had the generic version and didn't know if it would work. Can anybody explain what this means to me and can the phone just be flashed with his generic version?
I have an Orange phone, too. As I understand it, you can flash to generic firmware and everything will work, but you lose the Orange customisations. As far as I know, that's just the Orange logo at startup and the photo sharing program, so no great loss.
Telumehtar is correct.
I've just flashed my N80 on Orange tonight with the generic firmware and it's working fine!!
looking forward to using satnav without the dropouts!
I got my Nokia N80 (Vodafone) updated yesterday with the generic V4 firmware and it works a treat.
Backed up my phone memory using PC suite prior to the upgrade the only thing that I lost throught the upgrade was the Vodafone live direct link and settings.
Got on the Vodafone Live website re-sent the wap settings to my phone and hey presto....... Perfect.
The only upgrade at the moment is for generic N80's so could be days, weeks even months for the Voda's, Oranges to come on board.
I reported that my phone kept freezing out and the upgrade was done under warranty, since the upgrade the phone works a treat, no freezing, no dropped calls and I feel the phone operates faster and smoother than before.
My advice is find a friendly Service Centre, even if you have to travel the extra mile.

I've just called two service centres close to where I work (neither of them Carphone Warehouse) and I'm disillusioned.
The first told me that 4.0623.0.41 had not yet been distributed to the service centres. This is clearly untrue.
The second told me that the system will automatically choose the correct firmware for the phone and that since Orange have not released a version 4 firmware I will not be able to get that version put on my phone. He suggested I call Orange and ask when that firmware will be available.
So has *anyone* managed to get a service centre to upgrade their Orange phone to version 4 (or any generic firmware for that matter)? If so, how? What are the magic words?
Thanks.
I took my N80 to a nokia service centre in Peterborough yesterday to have the software upgraded, and was told that they could not upgrade it, because O2 had not approved v4.0623.041. What should I do next ?:icon13:
Tell them that your phone keeps freezing up and you have be advised to update your firmware by Nokia.
Ask them to upgrade your phone with the new V4 generic firmware as this stops the current bugs with the phone.
I got a warning saying that 1 out of 10 phones reject the generic firmware and may be damaged in the process.
I was feeling lucky and went for it.
As per my recent post above, find a good Service Centre and ask their advise. If you feel that your taking too much of a risk with the generic firmware, wait till your service provider brings theirs out.
I was impatient and it could of cost me a new phone, but hey!! life is a gamble.
