can anyone tell me which navigation software is free to use after buying it, don't want to run up a huge bill, looking for one that gives uk directions.

It must be one based on Card and not on Network. The only one, I think, for now, for S60v3 is Route 66.
Navicore is also available for S60v3, and looks IMO to be better than Route 66.
