Firmware update + unlock code ??

8 replies · 29,482 views · Started 28 August 2006

I have an unlock code for my n80 which is on v 3.0617.0.6

However, I would like to wait to upgrade the firmware when its available on the nokia site.

If i unlock the phone now and then upgrade the firmware will the unlock status still remain ? If not, can i just unlock it again with the same code ?

Can anyone confirm ???

Cheers!

Who gave You that unlock code? The network operator? If is the case, I think that the unlock code is the same.

Yep, network op.

Am I right in assumming the unlock code is like a one-way hash generated from your IMEI code ? So even if it locked after the firmware update i assume it should work again ?? (could be totally wrong though! lol)

I don't think you've got anything to worry about. I've upgraded my FW since unlocking my phone with no problem. Still accepts any sim card

Hi bigmouk. Did you get your unlock code from Orange, and if so, how dis you go about it? A number of threads on this site are querying how it can be done. Please let me know. Cheers, Odie.

The unlock code has nothing to do with the software upgrade. If you change the software version to the original nokia version, your phone will still be locked, if it was locked before. In the same way, if your phone is unlocked, updating software will not lock the phone. The phone software and the lock code are in two different locations of the phone memory.

Hi Bigmouk, I'll start by saying that I am probably wrong in my understanding, but this is where I'm at. Willing to be corrected! Please do so if I am wrong!

In as much as I've been able to figure, the unlock code is generated using your IMEI, some numbers that identify your service provider, and a private key known only to Nokia. I'm not certain if that makes it a one-way hash or not, I can't even pretend to understand internal workings of the phone at all (not even on TV)

The next bit is where I become mostly uncertain. When you key the unlock code in to your phone, I'm not sure if the raz3g chip uses that key to generate it's own conditional 'yes' or 'no' for unlock, or if it computes a result exactly the same way that nokia does and just makes a simple comparison of the code in that manner. If the latter, then definitely it is a one-way hash.
