I sticked an "Asus WIFI card" into my computer, it doesn't detect a network(correct), and does not detect my N80:
(sorry for the dutch screenshot, it says "no network(s) found"😉
On my N80 i can't configure my computer to be the Wlan network, because it's not detectable. When i want to create a new accesspoint, i choose at "WLAN netw. name" for "Search for netw.". After 2 seconds it gives the alert:
No WLAN network found.
I installed the Home Media Server from SimpleCenter: SimpleCenter
It doesn't detect any devices:
- i do not run a firewall
Maybe i'm doing this al wrong? Should my N80 recognize my Computer as a WLAN, or do i need a router for that?
Yes it is possible to get the N80 recognize the computer's WLAN. You will have to set the computer to advertise itself as an access point. Unfortunately I dont have specific instructions how to accomplish this.
Hi!...
i am working ok my Upnp Servrer with XP SP2 and LinkSys Wireless-G Broadband Router ...
The Home Media Server (same software that you are running) it is detencting the N80 just fine and all functions are working between PC and N80 ...
But!... i read that NOT ALL WiFi products or WLAN Routers, etc... are Upnp enable or supported ...
I read and found specifically this Linksys model that has the Upnp support ... thats why u bought it ... may be all the newer products came with this feacture... but must be on the specs list of the product ...
hope this help you ... try with some friends WLAN routers or something. ..
cya!

The WiFi product does not have to support UPnP for the N80<->PC connection to work. The UPnP is actually just a set of protocols that work on top of the standard wifi (or any other network media) layer and it is used to enable sharing of content or control between two (or more) devices.
The N80 should find your wlan whether you use the UPnP feature (home media server) on your PC or not.

hey, maybe this will help. I got my to work after following the directions

All step-by-step guides are talking about the Router, but i don't have one.. Is a router needed to make an UPNP connection?

First: Forget the UPNP. Just try if you can make the N80 to find your WLAN and maybe try the web browser of your phone.
When that works, then try the UPNP (start the home media server).
AFAIK, the UPNP support in routers means only that the router can be controlled by using the UPNP protocol.
This seems not to be very clear to some people:
UPNP = Just a set of protocols that, in this case, enable sharing of pictures, music, and videos from your phone. Not required if you only use the WLAN to browse the internet with your phone. The UPNP protocols should go through the router without problems, whether the router supports UPNP or not (unless blocked by a firewall).
