What size for background pictures?

What pixel size should I make a picture so it fits nicely in the background, I tried different sizes and sometime is scales them and puts them in the center of the screen, and sometimes the width is right but they are too short. Any ideas?

I use 352x300 and it works good for me

it annoys me we cant get full screen backgrounds.

If you want a full screen background then just create your own theme. It's quite easy... head on over to:

Is it realy neccessary for us to create an own skin?
I there now other way of maximzing the background to the full resolution?
