N80 and Airport internet sharing

12 replies · 7,079 views · Started 04 September 2006

Hi ... I just bought my n80 which I chose over the Sony k800 for the WiFi access. But im having a difficult time getting it to access my internet connection.

I have previously shared my powerbooks broadband connection before to other computers via airport (wifi), without any trouble ... but I cant get the n80 to connect.

Im using mac os x 10.4 and have airport and internet sharing turned on. The n80 finds my computer, and I can define it as an access point but when I choose to connect via this access point in the services browser, I either get a "no gateway reply" message, or a blank page then the phone eventually displays "disconnected".

If anybody can help me out with how to get this working I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks 😊

I have the same layout (PowerMac with Airport card and internet sharing ON on that port). Sorry if tech terms may not be correct as I use Italian language on my phone
BUT :

On your N80 go in connection settings/connection points and select modify your newly created WLAN connection point (U name it) and then go "options/advanced options/IPv4 settings" and set your ip (ie :10.0.2.4) submask (ie: 255.255.255.0) and "gateway" must be be the IP of the router that in this case will be the airport card (ie : 10.0.2.1 - on a mac you should have the same values) also primary DNS should correspond to gateway IP so in this case : 10.0.2.1

Others might have the IP of the router/card belonging to another series of numbers so check that and just set your phone IP using the same series and changing the last number

(Tip for Macuser: when your ...Book is connected to the airport network you can check the book IP ... be sure not to use the same "last number" on your phone)

Hope it helps, have fun

Hi,

Thanks very much for your help. I configured the phone as you said, however I still get a No Gateway Reply message...

As I mentioned, I have Internet Sharing on (sharing my ethernet (dsl) connection to computers using airport (wifi)) ... Is there anything I could be missing?

Network Utility reports that my Airport card IP is indeed 10.0.2.1 - but it says the link status is inactive. Could this mean anything?

Thanks ...

Well I set 2 different phones the same way and always works, be you sure that in your phone, in advanced settings of access point you click on IPv4 and set IP to 10.0.2.3 then back and click on subnet mask and set it to 255.255.255.0 then back and click on gateway and set it to 10.0.2.1 then back again and click on DNS and in the first line set to 10.0.2.1 and that is it.

PS : in basic settings of access point check that type is set to infrastructure ....that's all I can say.

THANKYOU! After I changed the access point type to infrastructure, it works great. Faster than browsing with my old powerbook!

Thanks again

Hi could you help me please as i am trying to connect the wlan from my nokia n80 and i am keep getting error no gateway found. Could you tell me the right settings please and my router security is off so how can i access without any settings? the router which is not security enabled do i still need to put the shared key in order to access to it?

Has anyone been able to connect their N80 to the Mac using WEP? I cant seem to get it working. If i dont use WEP, it connects fine.
Thanks

I have never managed to connect to my home WiFi router using WEP.
Luckily I was able to set my router to use WPA/PSK and it works 100%

Can the Mac support WPA/PSK?

if you have a problem with wep its likely that you are not choosing hex/asci correctly (or the wrong bitlength)

If you look at the logs on the mac you'll see bootpd is not giving the N80 an address.

This is what apple gave me:

Engineering has provided the following feedback regarding this issue:

A suggestion would be to please try the following work-around:
sudo niutil -createprop . /config/dhcp reply_threshold_seconds 0

The exact set of steps:
1) disable Internet Sharing
2) sudo niutil -createprop . /config/dhcp reply_threshold_seconds 0
3) enable InternetSharing

I used netinfo manager and it worked

Yes and it works fine!
What WEP key are you using?
To discover the airport wep hex key go to Airport admin utility, open your base station configuration and in the BaseStation menu you will find "Equivalent Network Password". Select this and you will see the Hex equivalent password (WEP key).
The airport admin utility lets you use a "non standard" WEP key to activate wireless security: for example you can use "hello" as your wep password. But then this works only with mac airport networks. To be compatible you must use the Equivalent network password.
Hope this helps.
Bye

Strangely, my N80 has consistently connected under a closed WEP key system. Now I am migrating to a router which uses WPA (only), and have an inconsistent connection, getting the 'no gateway' reply - but only half the time. How could this be?
