hi can anyone recommened a gps unit for my n80, somewhere off ebay maybe? should i be looking for anything special??

also when its in the car does it need to be in view of the window? will it work from a glove box, or anywhere hidden, i dont like having boxes on show!!!

cheers

Joe.

I have a Holux GPSlim 236, and have had no problems with it. I bought it because someone here said it worked even on old version 3 N80 firmware, and it worked for me, too.

I'm slightly disappointed in the time to first fix (after it's turned on), but I haven't compared it to other GPS units. It usually takes only 20 seconds to get a fix, but sometimes, frustratingly, takes a few minutes.

There are lots of reviews online; it seems to have good sensitivity compared to other brands.

Another vote for Holux GPSlim 236 here - rock solid once it's acquired the signal. It's reasonably fast on cold start (42 seconds) compared to the older chipsets - my TomTom Go Classic used to take 2 to 3 minutes to acquire satellites.

I use it in car (glovebox / cubby) and in house without having any signal problems. Got mine on eBay for £43 which included mains and car charger (and postage from Hong Kong). The battery is also easily replaceable.

i bought a nokia LD-3W a few months back for tomtom on my palm, works great

uses the same charger as N80 and comes with car charger, which was a bonus

I have a pb with my ld-3w. It takes five minutes or so before it picks upp the satellite signal, even when outside. Often it helps to restart it and try again etc. Has anybody else had this pb with the ld-3w? It's the same whether I use Wayfinder or Nav4all. I use V 4 on the N80 and bluetooth works fine.

The way a GPS works, depends a lot of signal and clima conditions. I have an LD-1W and don´t feel the problems You said. But works better with N70 then N73, because I think that this last one have some bluetooth issues - need a firmware upgrade for sure.

Have the same pb with my LD 3W, find it very temperamental in getting a signal, sometimes it hooks on to satelites in <1 min, sometimes I had to turn off then on a few times. Originally I was going to return the unit but decided to keep it since once it has a signal it works perfectly, so put it down to environmental issues, big city lots of buildings etc.. Want ed to test it further, but my N80 has gone on the blink and has been returned to Nokia who aparently take 2-3 weeks to repair it under warrenty!
