I'm new to the forum, and despite all my reading efforts I'm unable to find out how to update my phone 😞
Can someone please tell me how I can update my firmware?

Legally: by taking the phone to a Nokia repair center (http://www.nokia.com/repair), or waiting until it is supported with the tool here: http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate
Bear in mind tho if you follow mrmadmac's advice Nokia will not support you if you manage to kill your phone in the process. It's unlikely but possible. Just something to bear in mind for you.

read from post #5 on.
Cheers guys, but reading that guide seems really complicated.
Where do I download the firware update from?

My buggy O-2 branded v 3.xx FW upgraded to generic v 4.xx .... what a dream !
Just follow the guide and you'll be peachy. 😉
So just drop it in the toilet then claim it off your house insurance - brand new phone for 50!
My fiance did it.
If you cant understand the instructions I would say don't bother and just take it to a service center.
But there is a really easy guide tool here called BB5 Reaper 2006

I'm not dumb or anything, and have got an A-Level in Computing and Physics, but it all seems way too complicated for what it is.
Where do I download the Firmware from, or is it already in Phoenix?

I don't think anyone's suggesting that you are - you just need to read through the guides and information already linked above and follow them step by step. All the information is there (including links for the firmware itself) and it really is easier than repeating it here.
Bear in mind that until Nokia release their software updater a few weeks ago, firmware upgrades were only meant to be performed by a trained engineer in a workshop setting. It took me a while to follow the process to upgrade my firmware using these guides, and I've worked in IT for over 10 years and regularly perform horrifically confusing firmware flashes of borked expensive hardware.
If you're unsure of what you're doing I really would suggest that you hang on for Nokia to include the N80 in their software updater - rumour has it this will happen by the end of the month.

N80's still not listed as supported according to their website, at least not in the UK: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate
And it'd be a cold day in hell before I trusted my N80 to any mobile phone store - last time I was in Carphone Warehouse the staff started asking me questions about phones 🙄

(By the way, are you really from Tasmania ?)

Nope 'fraid not. I've used this handle for about 12 years, for reasons that shall (for now at least) remain cloaked in mystery and intrigue
