I have read various items about the possible benefits of updating the N80 firmware to version 4.
My query is, my phone is on the 3 network. If i upgrade the firmware will i still retain all of the 3 software, the 3 internet interface etc, or does the phone reset to some other format. Is the menu on my phone courtesy of the symbian 60 software or is it part of the 3 software.
Thanks for any advice

No, you will get a Generic firmware loaded if you upgrade to V4 yourself.
Many would argue that's better than the 3 branded FW, but each ot their own.
You will lose all 3 branded apps or settings, or anything they bundle on their phones that isn't in the generic versions.
Make sure you note down all your connection settings for WAP, GPRS, MMS, etc., (including 3's mobile homepage etc.), before you upgrade the FW.
The alternative is to wait for 3 to release their branded v4 FW and apply that - but you may have to wait a month or two for it.
I had a chat with the local service cewntre about this last week and they said they would apply the update to a generic v4 if I had software related issues. They stated that the phone would be out of warranty for that period but as soon as a 3 v4 firmware came out they would flash it to that version for me and the phone would be back in warranty.
I rang 3 and asked them about the length of time they would need to customise the f/w for their handsets and the guy didn't have a clue what I meant by firmware. I sightd and said software and he still wasn't aware of the upgrade but assured me they would let me know when the 3 flavoured one would be available.
