Nokia - the Listening phone manufacturer?

Now, don't get too excited. This huge list of improvements to S60, posted on Tommi's Applications blog, isn't stuff which is all definitely being implemented, it's strictly user requests. But it's still impressive that someone at Nokia is both talking and listening to real users, and we're promised that the list has been passed on to the right departments.

Read on in the full article.

Gosh, there's so many things on that list which would be very handy indeed.

Maybe AAS should take another look at this list in a year's time and see how many suggestions were taken on board?

As you pointed out on their comments section, some of those things are already present on S60 and have been for some years (for example the FF and RW on videos), but people don't seem to have noticed them. Maybe a lot of the work required is to do with making features noticeable and easy to access instead of just being present.

My favourite suggestion was the one about having connection priorities, where it would use a wi-fi network if one is available and only defaults to GPRS if there isn't one, in the same way that 3G phones default to GSM if there's no 3G network available. This could apply to outgoing calls too, so they go through Skype (or whatever) unless there's no wi-fi available, although I don't know how happy the phone networks would be about that one. I know there's some kind of SIPS thing that's meant to do the calls side of things, but it hasn't received much publicity yet.

Another good one would be a built-in colour editor so you can alter the look of the interface without having to load in an entirely new theme. Mac and Windows have had this on desktop PCs for ages, so it'd be nice to have something similar on S60.

A lot of the suggested improvements should have been implemented years ago really.

If you go back to the 7650 and compare it with the N80 the whole interface has hardly changed, things that needed and were suggested then, like timed profiles/catagories/multi alarms etc etc etc are still missing.

The one thing that still gets up my nose after all these years for S60v1 to v3 is that contacts still show surname name first in the messaging app, why this has never been sorted I don't know.

New features like web with mini map (which I think is fab btw) have arrived but features that would really add usability to the phone have largely been ignored.

I am pretty sure that if it had more memory the old 7650 would stand up well against the S60v3 phones.

And finally........even the wifes S40 6280 has graphical smilies in the its messaging app and I want them and I want them NOW!😊

You can have them if you install a third party messaging app, and the same approach can solve a lot of other problems too.

I agree there should be a proper IM client in S60s as standard though, ESPECIALLY those ones with wi-fi abilities (which is an increasing number of them).
