Just picked up a Nokia E61 and in our building we have plenty of open WiFi networks...how do I connect to them? When connected how do I know that Im actually surfing through Wlan and not GPRS and charging up my phone bill?
Also, do you guys know of any free good software for converting video to the E61? (Im on a Mac)
Thanks!!
First of all, it's not a silly question.
When you open browser, you should be able to choose Access Point. You can choose Easy WLAN and then select one of the open network. Alternatively, you can create a new Access Point from Settings | Connections | Access Points.
How to differentiate between GPRS and WiFi? It is easy. If you connect via GPRS, you will see an icon with "G" or "E" at the bottom of signal strength bar. If you connect via WiFi, you will see an icon on the top right of the screen. Look at the user's guide to see how WiFi icon looks like.

Thanks Antony, it says 3g. But I did get it to ask me what sort of connection-type to use.
3G is another type of connection. You still pay to your operator to use the connection.
If you go to your Web application and select Options | Settings, you should be able to change the default Access Points. For me, usually I set it to "Always ask" so that I can choose which AP to connect.
Actually...you get a little icon on the top right of the display that looks like four squares making up a bigger square when you are connected to a WLAN.
There seems to be loads of confusion here. So as you can see, you question was far from being silly 😉
As anthony said, most properly designed applications, such as the web browser, will ask you what access point you want to use when you're connecting. On the E61, if you want to connect via wifi, choose "Search for WLAN" then select the wifi network you want to use.
As ventmore said, if the application is connecting via wifi, a small icon with 4 squares will appear blinking at the top right corner of the screen then stop blinking once it's connected.
On the E61, the 3G icon simply means that there is 3G coverage. It doesn't mean that you are connected via 3G.
If the application connects via GPRS or 3G, you will see a small icon with 2 arrows one below the other appear on the top left corner of the screen just below the antena icon. If you see that and did not intend to connect via GPRS or 3G (which is going to cost you money), close the current application immediately as this means that something went wrong.
Beware of poorly designed applications such as WorldMate. WorldMate will only ask you what access point you want to use the first time you're using it. Then, behind your back and without telling you anything, it will store this access point as the one to always use. The next time you'll use worldmate, it will connect straight away without asking you anything and without even telling you which access point it is using. If it happened to be your GPRS access point, you'll end up with the most massive phone bill you'll ever have in your life.
There is an icon on the screen if WLAN is active, it is a four small squares, that go solid when active.
Regarding movie conversion on a mac. Took me a while to find one myself. There is one called "MoviesForMy/Pod/PSP/Phone" think i found it on version tracker.

It's worth pointing out though that you can change the access point that Worldmate uses under the Options > Settings menu item from within Worldmate.
Cheers

Yes it's true but you can't choose "None" or "Always Ask". You have to choose an access point. So since mobile phones are, by definition, mobile and you therefore use different access points depending on where you are and what connection types are available to you, this means that whenever you want to update the weather forecast or the currencies, you first have to go to the settings and change the access point to the one you want to use. This is one the most stupid thing i've seen in ages.

Yeah I tried movies for My/Pod/PSP/Phone but it wouldnt let me set the resolution to 320x240 for some reason. Anyways I didnt like it to much and ended up paying for Visual Hub which does a great job at encoding my: Family Guy, Space Invader Zim episodes 😃
Also...is there a way of putting a password on a folder or the entire mini-SD? My Nokia 6233 let me do this.
Man Im really liking this phone more and more...
Thanks for all your answers guys! Great forum. :icon14:

You can't set a password for individual folders. To set a password for the sd card, go to menu -> tools -> memory. I wouldn't do that though. When my memory card had a password, the phone sometimes refused to launch applications stored on the card for no valid reason. Removing the password cured the problem. You can always try of course but keep that in mind so that you know where to look for if yout phone starts giving you strange errors when trying to launch some applications

I see, thanks for the heads up.
