Living with different platforms aka Living without Windows

I have never consciously tried to be Windows free but ever since I switched over to the Mac 3 years ago, I have found that all the devices I really rely on are not Windows-based: Laptop (Mac OS X) & the Communicator. I supplement the 9210 with a Sony Clie PDA but that has been consigned to be used just for reading Word Documents. I'm rambling here because although Mac & Palm are able to talk each other, and indeed OS X can now synchronise with Bluetooth phones such as the Sony Ericsson T68i and the Palm, our 9210 is still content to live in it's own sweet world. Bluetooth hasn't been implemented even in the 9210i. Now, I'm not a technical person but the fact that Palm can talk to what is essentially the now UNIX-based Mac, makes me wonder why on earth there has been no effort has been made to establish communication between the Symbian and Mac OS X platform. In short, I was patient waiting and expecting GPRS and Bluetooth on the 9210i and when that didn't happen, I am forced to resign to the fact that the 9210 will not see the rate of development it's due.

I think because the 9210 series target business people and managers who only work in big companies and I think most big companies use NT/2000 systems.

I found myselfhere.

Yes it is a shame it is only windows oriented. I use Linux alot now and wish there were a linux version of pc suite 😃

I'm seriously considering swaping my last windoze partition (used for games and the 9210 pc suite) to Linux (using WINE and WINEX so I can play my games etc), unfortunately I don't know of anyone getting the PC Suite to run under Linux with WINE.

Any takers for if and how it could be done.... If so, bye bye windoze..... FOREVER!

Take a look at the Symbian web site and the 9210 development examples. One of their developers wrote a sideways shooting game creatively called "Game". This in itself isn't that useful, but the project was designed to demonstrate two points:

- how optimised code could be made to be on the 9210.
- how to develop under Linux (including how to get PCSuite-esque functions).

I can't recall where the URL is off hand, but it shouldn't be hard to find from the developer's pages on the Symbian site.
