N70 First Impressions and Questions

It was with no small amount of trepidation I presented my once again faulty SX1 to the repair agent...
.. You're not supported by siemens anymore? great!.... :icon13:

Trusting the repair of my beloved SX1 to the care of IUG and a repairer no longer supported by the manufacturer could never have ended well. I was pretty sure I wouldn't see it again - the best phone (for all it's hardware issues) I've ever had.

Knowing that my manufacturer's warranty was over there was little more I could do.

5 weeks and a large amount of to-ing and fro-ing later my SX1 was officially pronounced dead by the delivery to me of a brand new N70. At first I didn't want it - I want an N80 but 70 is all IUG will spring for. Tried to sell it - nope no-one would touch it even for half the retail price. So here I am a week later with it unwrapped, re-flashed with unbranded fw, and a 1G memory card stuffed into that funny slot on the side. On the way are a black faceplate and a 3.5mm headset adaptor.

Gotta make the most of it right? Can't say I'm ungrateful afterall it is a very good phone going by the reviews on here.

So... impressions..

It's quite bulky compared to my sx1, but it's the same weight or lighter.

Keys are hard to get used to - close together and of course vastly different from the sx. Not sure I like the placement or the size of the menu key.. it doesn't seem prominent enough but I will probably get used to it.

The blue backlighting is nice, almost as nice as the lighting around the sx keys.

Screen is very bright - the extra colours definitely make a difference. The light sensor is back and actually seems to work (unlike on the 7650 where it seemed to be for decoration only).

Menu speed - it's quite smooth compared to the sx1 but still not quick. In the 3 years since the sx1 debuted I expected better. Strangely the unbranded firmware seems slightly slower than the vodafone branded.

Software included - Opera full version! One of my most used apps and it's nice to see a familia face! Weird funky 3D snake there too. Think I like SnakeEX better. The music player is quite funky. Seems to have taken cues from oggplayer and itunes - now possible to organize by genre/playlist/artist etc. Cool but it still doesn't support oggs so won't be too much use to me. Kinda boring now playing interface too. Looks like it could display album art? Sound quality is on par if not better than my ipod nano. Wicked.

Now some negatives/questions:

Alarm - only one? Can't set it to reoccur? WTF? Thought that would be fundamental.

Wallpaper - STILL can't do a fullscreen wallpaper from within the phone. Hell I know I can create themes, but it's no less hassle than all the messin around I had to do to create full screen themes on the sx1!

More later... gotta shoot out.

Music Player, is skinable see this thread. Album art is displayed if you tag with ID3v2 tags.

Use Handy Alarm for all your worldy Alarm needs.

All of the pre-installed Nokia software can be improved on with the dearth of 3rd party apps available.

I just Googled for an SX1 pic, not having seen one. You got lucky - you should be pleased you're now using a nice looking phone! 😉

Cheers 😊

In my opinion the n70 is butt-ugly in it's flashy chrome, all complicated looking and showy. The SX1 was the most unique cell phone I've seen, and it certainly grew on you in looks, not to mention the n70 is actually the first nokia to be more fully spec'd so the SX1 was class leader for a long time.

r.i.p my sx1 friend...

I'm aware of the wealth of S60 software available having owned a 7650 the minute they were released. My beef as always with nokia is that they always leave *something* out. Apart from opera, I didn't have to install anything at all on my sx1 to get what I consider 'core' functionality in a smartphone.

It has become difficult to sift through the screeds of rubbish software out there to find truly 'good' software. I'll check out Handy Alarm, I hope it's cheaper than psiloc's world clock offering (which was bundled with my sx1).

All my mp3s are tagged with id3 v2 but I wasn't aware id3 tags could include album art? I'll do some investigation 😊

My final gripe is the lack of functionality from the profiles - they have barely changed since the 7650. Still no timer/switching built in, something most lesser phones had a long time ago. Sure, again I can go elsewhere and install better software but for one of the top of Nokia's range with a premium price tag I shouldn't have to spend extra fixing their balls ups.
