Hi - if you have a generic E61 (not locked to a network), the nokia software update will now update it to the 2.xxx.xxx firmware.
It still does not appear on the list on the webpage but if you run the update, it find the phone and runs the update. Takes about ten minutes.

Thanks for the info. I've tried with my SIM-free E61 but it won't update it: no upates available it seems :con? What's different with my E61?
What does it say for the current firmware? - it seems to work on phones that are "RM-89".
Same here, with SIM-free E61, no updates available!
Which are the main advantages of the new firmware, if any?

Seems to be mainly stablity fixes and (I'm told improved audio) - however I'm sure that the messenging element did not look like this on the previous version:

looking at the nokia forums it says:
The Nokia Software Updater checks which software is available for your particular phone by comparing the software you currently have with latest software assigned to the 7 digit product code of your phone. If newer software is available for your 'variant', it will be downloaded.
so maybe the product code is different in different markets?

it only says E61 - RM-89 just like you. I bought mine from an eBay shop in england but judging from the keyboard layout, it seems that it's a spanish model. So that might be the reason...
Your screenshot of messaging looks exactly like the one i have on the first firmware. I can't see any difference. Have you noticed the new bugs with the new firmware that others are talking about? The number keys not working anymore with calcium or some of the shortcuts gone in Web?
All of this makes no sense to me at all.
How can one download an update when the necessary link isn't on the website? Do I just select a phone at random from the list?
Please give proper, more detailed instructions on what you mean and how to do it.

This is what I did - selected a phone at random on the list - then selected to do the update via my pc.
This then allows you to download the update software (which is generic) - I installed and ran the update software and it then detected the e61 and ran the update.
It is however starting to appear like it was not suppose to have been released yet and nokia have pulled the e61 firmware update - however try and see what happens.
i'm Malaysia, do the new update support mine keyboard mapping? just wondering how many here have done the upgrade?
As far as I can workout from discussions with others who have done the update, it currently supports unbranded e61 with a european keyboard.
(edit: I'm also seeing reports that those with the same type of e60 are also able to update).
All the E-series phones are listed on the European update site but none are listed on the UK site. Does your E61 have a UK or a European keyboard?
Well I purchased it in the UK so I'm guessing a UK keyboard - I did the update from the UK nokia page (where the e61 is still not listed).

Even though the E61 is officialy listed there, it still says "No software updates available for your phone" :frown: And i thought that buying it SIM free would avoid me all the hassle of operator specific firmware and would allow me to update my phone to the latest firmware as soon as it was available...
me worry if upgrade it, later my can't use the "PinYin" chinese input, since you said is UK website.
Well it's all academic anyway. The update needs bleeding Windows and we Linux and Mac users are alienated.
I will wait until the Nokia service centre people nearby have been 'trained' to install the update. They tell me this won't happen for a month.

i still prefer wait until Nokia (Malaysia) website have post the upgrade.
Some people were able to update on service centers before it was available online. I have seen some reports from them that on Opera and Calcium the numeric input needs the blue key to be pressed to work. Can anyone that has done the online update confirm this?
I just tried the firmware updater using the european link for my UK E61, but after installing the Installer and starting it, it checked the phone and said "no updates available" even though I am running 1.06.10.04.04...
Yes, I am still getting this with a SIM-free UK E61.
Yeah, mine's an unlocked UK E61 with SIM card...
Works with a unlock Swedish E61 with Swedish Keyboard, yay! 😃
like you mentioned, the keyboard, don't what keyboard mapping the firmware support. anyone try asia keyboard with chinese input.
There's a post over on the Nokia UK forums stie that says that the European site was updated first but that the UK site will get the same update in a day or two. I do not believe that there is any difference between these two sites, its just that one had to be updated first.

Hello.. I have an e61 from UK network Three. Has anyone had any success updating?
I currently have version 1.0610.04.04 RM-89 etc etc
I vaguely remember someone who was on 3 being told that if they updated their software it would make their warrenty with 3 invalid...
(I think I saw it on a thread here...)
That was me!
'3' have told me since that the update can be added to the phone ONLY by a Nokia Service centre or by themselves. If I attempt it myself, sucessful or not, the warrenty will be void.
