Did anyone have experience with Genimap Navigator and how it works compare to TomTom Ruteplanner?

I have TomTom but are not pleased specially with the map lay-out ,(difficault to see details)

Specially Im interesting for Genimaps GPS funcinallity!

do you have worked with the lam1 and tom tom it has a high resolution and also less than high it is good working with. TRYED CITYMAPS? I have worked with genimaps but the layout is not so good readeble as tom tom to little pictures etc
but for other countries as Europe maybe it is better

THE LAYOUT IS TO SMALL, CITYMAPS AND ROADMAPS.
the fonts are not of a great standard

I tested tom tom with lam on a flight from Amsterdam to Barcelona see the speed left in the picture 600km/h

I stillike genimap.

ANd I cannoyt say it is the best since the WISKEY angel visited me.

But I still like genimap. For my eyes only.

GENIMAP sais it works in Bucharest also.

I will wait for :x-mas: to get me the GeniMap.

Nice pictures you got there.

Things that make yo go hmm

:x I just got the Nokia GPS with the TomTom products, for my 9210. I wish I'd found this thread beforehand, then I'd have been more careful. The TomTom products seem to work quite well, except for the display colours, which are almost invisible. The smallest roads are drawn in white. Built up areas are drawn in white with an invisible hint of red. Water is drawn in white with an invisible hint of blue, and parks and woods are drawn in white with an invisible hint of green. The result is that what you see is white roads drawn on a white background. D'oh!!!! :x

I've started chasing TomTom about this, they say "Goodness! We've never heard of this! We are completely innocent! Have you tried Nokia? It can't be our problem!!". This is quite strange, because I did manage to contact Nokia, and one of their people phoned me, to say that he had exactly the same problem, with his 9210i, and had reported it to TomTom.

It's incredible that TomTom have made this botch-up. As a long-time software developer (C++ and MS-Windows, some Crystal), I know it's just not complicated to get colours right. For example, compared to the line drawing, or the route calculation, it's soooo trivial.

For Citymaps there are some .Clr files, which have R,G,B values. Strangely, these values are in 16M colour space, i.e. 256 values available for each of R, G, and B. This is a bit suspect, since the 9210 uses 4096 colour space, i.e. 16 values available for each of R,G, B. Whatever, I thought I could edit this file, and change the values. I edited it with notepad on my PC, and copied it back, but PCSuite copied my new file across as a Word file. The original .Clr file was a WWW file, and the result is that Citymaps won't accept the new file. :x

I thought so too - and you are right, you can edit this file - just make sure you right click on the notepad file when you drag it back to the Nokia, then select 'copy here' (not convert). It works - I just need to work out the ideal combinations for each map component now.

i would just like to know if its possible to buy the genipmaps GPS module in the UK. all the sites i visit for this GPS module are not in english 😞 .

also, i see from the pictures provided by Willem he has connected to the internet, why has this been done, and do you have to connect to the internet to use the GPS module.

thanks.

Dominc, you are a star! 😃

I tried what you suggested, and it worked!!! Rightclick+Draging my editied Brittan2.Clr into the <Drive>\System\Apps\Citymaps directory got me a "Copy" (only) option when I dropped, and I opened Citymaps, chose "Map|Preferences...|Color style", and chose Brittan2, and all my awful colours appeared. As you say, now I need to spend some time fiddling to work out what the colour map deal is. I'll post my finished version when I'm done.

For anyone who doesn't understand what's going on, I've included a couple of pictures. The first is the "white on white" display that I get with Citymaps, and the second is a grab from http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/SMU/gps_01.htm, Willy Claessen's review of the Nokia LAM 1 with TomTom products. His colours work, mine don't. TomTom deny there is a problem..

kalim13 : I'm not 100% certain, someone may smack me, but from my moderately OK German, the Genimaps article says that it downloads all its maps, dynamically, over your internet connection. TomTom have a similar product, and if you really want to give all your money to your dial up mobile ISP, and pay for every minute you need to use GPS/mapping, it'd be a great idea. Alternatively, you could buy a 128M memory card, and a product that doesn't need continuous data call, and give me about E500 every month... (because you must have lots of spare money!!)

So, this is a fix for Citymaps. Anyone got the fix for Routeplanner?

(I sort of wonder why TomTom don't monitor this group. Clearly they have no system for recording known bugs; if they just searched this site for TomTom, they'd find all of them, and probably find the fixes too. Dominc, I figure they should give you and me our money back, as a reward... ;-> (Why is there no evil grinning winky smiley available?)

To TomTom, the following message:
:2gunfire:

So, I've spent far too long on this, heck, I think when I buy a product, it should work, not need about 24 hours hacking and patching. I really think TomTom have done a rubbish job on Citymaps and Routeplanner, and they obviously don't care, and neither do Nokia. The problem is reasonably easy to fix, if you actually can be bothered to put the effort in. Which neither Nokia nor TomTom did. Draw your own conclusions. Next time, I'll buy an IPaq...

This page is determined not to offer me an option for attachements, dunno why, so instead of including the file, here's its content:

copy everything inside the "-------" to a file in notepad, and save as "Brittan2.Clr". (Belgian, Deutsch, etc, use your gumption, I only changed water, background, built up areas, woods, parks, and "edge" colours...) Best make sure there are no trailing linefeed/carriage returns. Then, in file manager on your PC, use right-click+drag, to drag Brittan2.Clr into <Drive>\System\Apps\Citymaps. (Make sure Citymaps isn't running!). Drop the file, and you should get a popup of options, choose "Copy", NOT "Copy and Convert".
Start Citymaps, and in "Menu|Map|Preferences|General|Color style" select "Brittan2". Voila, visible colours.

Now I find a whole new set of bugs, like "sea" is the same stuff as "background", which is the same as "Land". So, if I could just cross a narrow canal of water around the UK, I could walk across the North See/Land plain to Holland. That'll be helpful... Such eejits.

Are Nokia and TomTom rubbish, or what?
Things I'd do to them:
:microwave:

AlastairB - thanks!

I really must make an effort to spell my own name correctly in future posts...

I just changed the backgrounds as follows:

100,255,100 // background
150,150,150 // built-up area (city)
125,125,255 // water solid
050,255,050 // park

didn't bother with the roads etc, as changing these four backgrounds seems to do the trick - ugly but functional. None of the other background appear to be used (for UK maps at least).

re Routeplanner: I suppose these settings are stored in the resource file (*.rsc)?

I am a bit annoyed with Tom Tom (nee Palmtop) as well as it seems to me that they have lost interest in the Symbian user base (e.g. no plans currently to launch CityMaps for P800). I imagine it was the success of their Epoc products (Money, FinCalc, En Route, Street Planner, Collins Dictionary, etc) - most of which I purchased - that created the base to develop for other platforms.

Hi,
I'm also annoyed with TomTom. I phoned and emailed them loads on Friday, and the minute I stopped harassing them, they stopped playing. I copied their support people and their sales people with the colour fix file for Citymaps (see prev post), including some fairly disgruntled words. I copied some Nokia email addresses too. No response from either.

But, TomTom must have done some work to integrate the Nokia GPS module, which must have been just before Oct 2002 (date of Willy Claessens review, http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/SMU/gps_01.htm), so they haven't written Symbian off yet. My impression is that they, and Nokia, just aren't very good at supporting the product.

Dominic, if you've set your background to "000,255,000", try looking at a map with sea on it! TomTom think that "sea" is background ("land" is also background), so your sea will show in full green. This happens with lots of lakes too, e.g. the reservoirs around Heathrow.

I found that changing some "edge" colours for water, woods, built up areas helped.

Unless TomTom get back to me about fixing Routeplanner, or a way of fixing bugs in map data, this will be my last post here for a while.

regards. 😉

I have been using LAM-1 + TomTom maps on 9210 and 9210i since the 2nd day after the product became available in the UK. On both devices, my maps have shown colours for the background on all occasions. perhaps the problems may be device specific?

It's also fair to say that the colour contrast when the maps are on my 9210i screen could be a lot better - the display is nowhere near as good as "Willy Claesens screenshots" would indicate. I have also done screen grabs from CityMaps and route planner and they do come up markedly better on the PC display.

I guess this could well be to do with the number of colours. It does suggest to me that the detail is available in the mapping software and the problems are to do either with the resolution of the display or the software driving it. I get the best results using the "Greys" option on citymaps - this gives grey roads on a white background.

Dominic, if you've set your background to "000,255,000", try looking at a map with sea on it! TomTom think that "sea" is background ("land" is also background), so your sea will show in full green. This happens with lots of lakes too, e.g. the reservoirs around Heathrow.

ah yes - hadn't spotted that one - I was mostly concerned with being able to see minor roads etc. I have fiddled about with some of the other backgrounds now and it works OK (although sea is still green, away from the immediate coastline).

I wonder if Tom Tom developed the colour palette using the SDK on a PC - this would explain why they didn't spot the lack of contrast on the Nokia screen.

It's also annoying that there are still various mistakes in the underlying data (e.g. wrong capitalisation and even wrong spellings - check out 'Erogmore' on Routeplanner!), but I suppose this is down to a third party (i.e. not under Tom Tom or Nokia's direct control).

Still a good application IMO, just not as good as it could have been (and not as impressive as the original Streetplanner was when it was first launched).

hey, I lost this topic.

What do you insinuate....

Even if i sad diferent, TOMTOM is the best available....for me....
