N80i VOIP SIP?

Hmm just seen this bit in the N80i press release that I hadn't paid much attention to before -

Making an Internet call with the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is as easy as making a regular voice call only the call is carried over WLAN. The VoIP framework (based on the SIP protocol) is integrated into the Nokia user interface, and the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is allows for downloading compatible third party internet call applications. The wireless LAN wizard will help you locate and set up a WLAN connection, when you are close to a WLAN, either at home or a public hotspot.

Do we think this means they actually got a full VOIP SIP client in the new version of the phone as opposed to just the old PTT?

They had better be porting that back to us normal N80 users...

Yes same sip front end as my E70.
there is an extra config menu under 'connection' - 'internet tel settings'.
once configured you have the option of making a 'voice call' (gsm) or internet call.
This should of been added to the N80 with the last firmware upgrade. after comparing the two phones the N80 seems half finished.

It think it is a full VoIP client, like E Series....

If we could put our hands on a N80 I.E. product code... 🙄

OK - in Feb. there was a Symbian Skype client ... at least according to the screenshots ... with a 3rd series coming soon - this is the partnership between Hutchinson and 3g ... ? Call me sceptical ... but I am feeling kinda annoyed at the lack of anything good that the WiFi does - I now have 30mb a month of downloads and frankly I never seem to go below 27mb ... Does anyone actually use their WiFi for much ?

yea..I use mine all the time 😊...where I live there are many free hotspots in restaurants clubs and bars, and also free hotspots from the telecom company in many streets, I communicate with email alot, and also have to have access to the web for info gathering.

I have recently started using tivi to make free calls to other tivi mobile and computer users (all my friends collegues and family have it) .. and it works satisfacory
Skype are dragging their feet, and truphone (when its released) havent got a client for the PC which I think is a major flaw to their approach.

I also use Orb alot when I am out, if I am waiting for friends, or stuck somewhere with nothing to do I can watch live TV piped from home over wifi to my mobile.

I wouldn't ever buy a phone without wifi now.

Having said that, I have to keep an eye on the power consumption, because the battery dies very very quickly, at home the phone is always plugged in and connected to wifi so tivi is on all the time.

yep mostely for:
-surfing when at home and the wifes on the laptop.
-Msn messenger
-google maps mobile
-podcasts (using nokias app)
-Will be using it for SIP soon (either truphone or flash to N80ie)

You can use the service from challengermobile with the Nokia N80ie. They'll also send you all the settings you need over the air for free.

Challenger mobile is SIP based so you can call any network that supports SIP.

Cheers,
John

Is that true?

I thought SIP networks need to peer/partner with others to be able to call any network.

Certainly I've found problems calling from some (e.g. PlusNet) to almost any, whereas some (like sipgate) seem to be much better for calling any network.
