E61 Wifi range

I've just bought a USB Wifi adaptor that can be set to AP mode.

I do get a connection with my E61, but I have two problems.

1. I keep getting a disconnection. I HAVE disabled the power saving on both the E61 and the Dongle. I have no security at the moment - so thats not an issue.

2. The range between the wifi dongle and the E61 is awful. I live in a two storey building and between the wooden floors (less than 3m) I loose a connection. If I walk less than 4m away from the USB adaptor I loos connectnio (on the same floor).

I do plan buying a 'real' Access point in the near future, but now I'm thinking twice - not sure if it's the USB wifi dongle (Edimax EW7318ug) or the E61.

Any ideas

Thanks

Clive

Wirelessly posted (Nokia E61: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.1; U; en-us) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413 es61)

Take a look a the antennae options for real Access Points - and then compare with the size of a typical dongle..

You now have a handheld with a small antenna and an AP with an even smaller antenna i suppose - it just have to give you an awful coverage. get a Linksys WAP54G or similar and see the difference.

With Cisco 1131 AP's i easily get 40-50 m range indoors in an open office space between AP and a PC, but much less between AP and E61.

My wifi router at home is a D-Link dsl-g624m. I live in a flat at the first floor of a rather old building. My E61 picks up my wifi network just fine when i stand in the entrance hall at the ground floor, below my flat and even when i'm standing outside. So the E61 might not have the best wifi range ever (not surprising given its size) but it does have a good enough sensibilty with a proper AP. Of course, the problem might also be the material used in your floor, maybe there's something in there that causes problem (i'm not a specialist at all). I also haven't experienced any disconnection or any other problem with my wifi router.

i use a Dlink bottom of the range wireless router mounted in my ceiling roughly in the middle of my house and get a pretty stable connection all around approx 20m radius. The lowered TX output option (100 mW down to 4 mW) did not seem to make any significant difference to my battery life or range? The power saving mode buggered me around a bit till I gave up on it.

My one gripe is that I keep forgetting to disconnect from the WLAN and the my battery life dies within a few hours - a real pian. is there any way to have the WLAN auto disconnect after (say) 15 minutes of inactivity? Like modems in the old old days?

try to set wireless lan to show availability - "never"
menu tools/setting/connection/wireless lan/ never
hope this help

It is the dongle that is the problem. They are notorious for having a limited range. Try it at a friends place that has a proper wireless access point or router. I can get about 25 meters from my router (WRT54GS - Hacked firmware) before the signal gets shakey on the E61.
Also in my local supermarket car park I can view all their wireless Till Points on the E61 at over 40 meters away with a good singnal too - shame they're WPA locked down lol

HTH.
