agile messenger has recently gone commercial with a monthly fee

how greedy since msn messenger on pc is totally free

Isn't it amazing how many people totally miss the point of a post. The question is about the BUILT IN IM, not 3rd party ones.

Sorry I can't help, but at least I read it correctly! 🙄

I undestand that the question is about the built in application.
But, if that one doesnt work, then go to alternatives🙄

The Builtin IM progam supports a standard known as "Wireless Village" services such as Yamingo offer a bridge between the Wireless Village protocol and networks such as MSN and Yahoo. This allows basic messaging to other MSN users, but it's far from an ideal system.
The main issue I have with the builtin IM program is that it can't be used with WiFi connections, which rules it out as a serious possiblity for me.

I get the impression the built in messenger is there for operators to use (and none do yet).

Most operators will be relucatant to support any kind of messenger facility that will take away revenue from text messaging, so until they can work out how to charge an arm and a leg for it, it will remain of little use I suspect.

I've noted also that some tariffs (e.g. T-Mobiles walk'n'web) actually go and ban certain protocols that are harmful to their profits, including VoIP and messenger!
