Nokia Software Update for Australian E61 doesn't work?

Hi All,

I have a Nokia E61 I purchased outright in Australia (NOT from a provider), thus its unbranded and unlocked. However, Nokia Software Update tells me that there is no software available for this phone. It refers to the phone as a Nokia E61 (RM-89) and when I request the firmware version, the phone displays:

1.0610.04.04
19-04-06
RM-89
Nokia E61

Since the network protocols in AU and Europe are the same, I can't work out why. Has anyone been able to update an Australian E61?

Thanks.

I have the same revision of the software for my phone too. Nokia telll me the update on the website and in the Nokia service centres will not work with my UK supplied phone issued by '3'. It seems they have a special version for their phones.

'3' tell me that I can send the phone back to them and they will update it for me but will not send me the firmware file to do myself.

Well that makes sense as your phone was networks supplied and probably network altered and/or network branded. Mine is direct from Nokia. Does anyone have a non-provider supplied E61 purchased in Australia that they've successfully updated?

Mine is a SIM-free E61, a spanish model apparently judging from the keyboard layout. It also won't update via Nokia's software update. It tells me that there are no software updates available at this time. Not such of a problem since the new firmware seems to introduce more problems than it solve. I haven't experienced any stability problems or other major problems with mine so i guess i'll wait until Nokia releases a fixed v2 firmware before upgrading.

I have an unlocked (unaffiliated) GSM-based E61 bought online here in Canada but sourced from the UK (including a UK charger plug) with the same firmware as yourself. I too get the same "no updates available" message but I can't figure out why. I used the software updater on the european site, but this is irrelevant anyway because the software updater is simpy a conduit to access the online update service at Nokia.

I too get this error.

I'm not holding my breath for any new update. Nokia do tend to do things slowly even when recognising there is a problem, which in this case I don't think they do as I have seen no official comments about the problem.

Here's another associated problem I have. After asking the Nokia Service Centre to try (before Nokia told me there was no update for me), I found the Worldmate application (supplied by Nokia on the memory card for free) will no longer install. Nokia tell me this is because any reflash of the firmware (old or new version) will upset the app into thinking it's on a new unlicenced machine. 😞

I'm in no rush for the update either since it appears to cause as many problems as it solves. As for Worldmate, I find it quite a useless piece of software anyway (and I travel 150 days a year). The E61 has a built in world clock anyway, and Worldmate's weather info is completely false: the other day it was 24C and sunny here in Montreal and it said it was 16 and raining!
