Please can anyone give me the steps to recover data out of the ECS file - in readable format on PC.
I lost my mobile and I am basically stuffed.

ECS backup file dat recovery witout the phone.
If you copy the .ecs file of interest and rename the copy .zip, you should be able to open it with WinZip (if you have Windows XP, this can natively open ZIP files). Once open, open the "backup" folder, and then open "filestore.dat.txt". This contains an index of what file is stored in each of the numbered DAT files.
It's a bit longwinded, but it does work. I think that there is an application available for doing this, but I have no idea what it's called.
