Anyone else noticed that you can't actually press more than one button at once on this phone apart from the directional pad? I thought it was just the software at first but I've tried to play several games and it's the same on all of them. What's the point of a 3D accelerator if the games are gonna be limited from the start? I notice how System Rush Evolution was designed so you don't notice this.
Is this gonna be fixed or am I an idiot or what?
It, indeed, seems to be an issue/problem with the N93.
Note that the N93 isn't really positioned as any kind of gaming device by Nokia. There are other uses for graphics acceleration, too; imaging/video, web page rendering/scaling, etc..
Also, if the graphics accelleration hardware comes for "free" with the processor chosen for other reasons, it doesn't mean that all its capabilities are are used to the fullest, if they serve no value for the primary purpose the device has been designed for.
Hopefully it should do. Is it a N93 specific problem? Very bad with something that has a 3d cjip inside. People have got quake and doom running on it.
Not just this, symbian devices are allegedly designed for interoperbility from the start.

First of all, Nokia has publically bragged about N93's gaming capabilities in shows a number of times. Secondly, being able to press two buttons at once is not exactly a "gaming feature" but rather a general interface feature that can be used in all kinds of software. These devices are small computers and as with any computer, I expect to freely be able to use its hardware (and none of it was "free" btw!) for my reasons, whatever they may be. I say it's a design flaw, that hopefully can be fixed with firmware. Possibly there could also be ways around it in how you program the software?
Did some testing with the Skyforce beta demo:
Moving the ship by first holding in the the directional pad WILL block simultaneous input from fire button (5). However, holding in the fire button (5) first will NOT block simultaneous later input from directional pad. Go figure.
Also tested with a Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard (using nokia drivers) and none of the above input constraints applied. Used directional keys on bt keyboard and fire (5) on phone simultaneously just fine. So there is a way around it...
I suspect that the upcoming N93 firmware update may fix this oddity.
Steve
It might, or then it might not.

Ahh, but they have to! Experienced my first "one button interface limitation mishap" today, having owned an N93 for only a few days.
Try changing video mode in ScummVM by pressing "0+2". Nothing happens. Worked fine on my old N80 and even much older 6600. It's kinda ridiculous, this.
Btw, do you all who experience this problem run the latest firmware? I don't, but I'm waiting for the cob webbed "Nokia Software Updater" to include N93. Maybe it's already fixed in the latest firmware (wishful thinking, maybe...)?
That complete listing of all the supposed fixes didn't include a fix for this but then that's disappeared now and fingers crossed it didn't actually include everything. This thing is really pising me off cos when I'm texting fast with two hands I keep missing letters out cos I don't quite lift one button up before I press another.
I was gonna wait for the Nokia Updater but one of my buttons is beginning to stick down cos I tink something got behind it and I can't get to it myself so I might take my phone down to Nottingham to get it sorted and I'll get it updated at the same time. Just gotta wait til my car's back from the car doctors.
I've read some posts dealing with this issue on the vampent.com forum, the makers of the SNES emulator vSun.
It seems they've tried every programming trick in the book to get past this limitation for thier beta (imagine a Super Mario that can't run and jump at the same time! :icon13: ), but they had to give up.
All I want to know at this point is if it's even fixable through firmware, or if I'm forced to use a big old keyboard to get stuff happening on my new "multimedia computer".
Why can't they just get simple s**t right? To give me a reason to buy a N95?😡
Does anyone know if this is a problem with all S60 3rd series phones or just this one?

No problem whatsoever on the N80 (owned one), and not what I've heard on any of the other N-series. For some reason they've (in my eyes) made a real poor design decision on thier most expensive flagship smartphone.... My old 6600 didn't even have this problem, for gawds sake.
I've mailed Customer Care in Sweden, asking if this would/could be fixed or not. They had no direct answer to that, other than that the N93 doesn't support "multi button functionality", as their product responsible put it.
When I then asked them where this was documented, they futher directed me to forum nokia's developer support for more information. I'll take look, but I'm affraid I won't get the answers that I want to hear....
I actually went to the developer's forum, posted this problem, and got sent away. No en-user-problems there, they said :+( I agree with goodcop, this can't be explained away by stating that this is not a gaming-machine. Software is being developed and sold for this thing, that doesn't work as advertised because of this bug.
The fact that the same problem also happens when you map buttons to the buttons on the upper part of the phone, leeds me to believe that this is indeed a software problem. I asked Nokia in different ways to adress this problem, but they refuse to answer. Quite rude I think, support is part of making a product, even more so if it is a flag-ship, real-life tech-demo product...
Please, everyone who owns a N93, please contact Nokia about this. The more people let them know this is not acceptible, the more likely it is that they will fix this soon.
I'm gonna post it on the N93's wikipedia page as a piece of criticism, maybe they'll notice then. Have to find a source to cite though and make it look all nice.
*edit*
Possible source but I'm questioning the authenticity, the graphics look shit but not quite as shit as they should be for the N93. Maybe just a tacky PS2 game.

The video is authentic, more trailers can be seen here at the "next generation gaming" blog Nokia has going:

This video could also be of interest..."bringing the gaming experience to ALL nokia n-series devices" (failing to mention that the "3D enabled multimedia computer" you're running the demo on actually can't be used to PLAY the games, because of no "multi button functionality"?). Hah...

Ah, that's excellent news... I can only assume they'll fix the button-problem before they release those games. It would be pretty strange if they advertise with the N93 as game machine, and not allowing games to be played...
Who's Next looks pretty cool BTW =)
In other news, the N93 is on the NSU, so everyone can update themselves.
I'm thinkin of getting this phone a quick question bout this issue...
Most of the latest nokia s60 phones makes use of the pen button to copy and paste text which requires u to press 2 buttons at once is this not possible with the N93? Doesnt it have the pen button

It has the pen button and all mark/copy/paste functionality like all the other phones, so no worry there.
Playing Total Air Mayhem I notice that if you try to fire while moving it won't work but if you hold down the fire button and then press the directional button you can move while firing but then if you lift the fire button up whilst moving you'll stop firing but you'll also stop moving. I'm kinda hoping that this does mean it's software cos they must be talking to the phone whilst the various buttons are down.
BTW, I'm looking into this Wikipedia thing but I wouldn't be upset if someone beat me to it, I've just gotta get the hang of this formatting business cos I have to make a whole new section to get it to look right.
*edit*
I also updated my firmware, still no multi-buttons.
*another edit*
It's on wikipedia but right now it's linking to this page as a source that people are pissed off. Wouldn't mind another source that doesn't have me discussing using Wikipedia to try and fuck with Nokia and whoever had that email from Nokia that'd make a good source if you could host it somewhere.
I anyone wants to work on that stuff I did I won't be offended, I'm not pleased with the "a seemingly basic feature" bit.
As i posted on the forum for scummvm:
I just uploaded two videos on how it works perfectly te combination between numbers. It is true that sometimes it doesnt work on the first try. you got to try tapping the numbers fast 02 02 02 02 02.. and then it starts working. other times it works nicely. My FW is V11.0.034 17-08-06

just in any case i have this version of Scummvm : http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/scummvm/scummvm-0.9.0-s60-v3-scumm.sis?download
its the latest one on the web..
As you guys probably allready know, the latest software update fixes this button-problem. Very good thing indeed. 😊
Hi is it possible to press diagonals in the N93 keypad? e.g. left and down at the same time
Yes!!!!!! (with the new firmware)
I've also had the same problem you describe- it's most noticeable when accidentally holding the camera photo shutter button whilst typing an SMS.
Has the n93i the same problem?
