Sync with Thunderbird

Anyone looked into syncing the N80 with Thunderbird instead of Outlook?

I presume Nokia PC Suite has no concept of what Thunderbird is and only sync's with outlook but I wonder if there's anything out there to sync Nokia phones or specifically the N80 with other applications, or if there are any projects that are aiming to develop a Thunderbird sync app.

Given the ability to have the N80 connected as a mass storage device via USB it's possibly just a case of reading and writing the relevant contact database file(s) in the right format so a tool to sync between the two shouldn't be too hard in theory. If I had the time I'd start writing such a thing myself, but as my day job is software the last thing I really want to do is write more software at home (well, not unless it's fun 😃). I might take a look just to see how feasible it is.

Just a though...can you sync thunderbird with outlook first, then outlook with your N80

Not sure if this is possible because I dont use either program, but could be a solution

Yeah I realise that may be the case at the moment but I was just wondering if anyone's looked into the possibility. Anything's possible. As said I may look into it myself if the file format for the contacts is simple enough. Would probably have to be a sync whilst connecting the phone as a mass storage device rather than in PC Suite mode.

Cash - I don't use or even have Outlook or Outlook Express installed, not at home at least (have to at work). Thunderbird is a very viable and free alternative for basically a mail and contacts client. Combined with OpenOffice it's an very good replacement for the overpriced MS Office, especially considering how 90% of people use probably only 20% of the funcationality in Office.

SyncML has possibilities. Seems like it's a good open standard way of doing it anyway and is device independent. The question is whether to use (and trust) a public SyncML server or run my own. I notice Orange apparently do a service but that would only be on Orange branded phones (mine's generic sim free).

Edit: Looks like zyb.com does the job just fine. Just did a sync to their server and then installed this extension for Thunderbird...

Thanks.
