E70 - Setting Default Access Point for Email Access

5 replies · 7,507 views · Started 06 October 2006

When I download my e-mail with the E70, it does not give me a choice of selecting the access point, but instead automatically uses the GPRS-Internet point from my mobile provider. I have set up a WLAN access point for my home wireless internet, but I can't seem to find a way for the phone to use this instead of the GPRS. The WLAN does show as an Available WLAN but never shows as an Active Data Connection.

I believe that I have set up the WLAN access point correctly. I have not set up an Access Point Group.

For my previous phone (6681) I could define the access point to be used but I can't seem to find a similar function in the E70.

Any help woulld be greatly appreciated.

Go to: Messages - Definitions - E-mail - Mail Box - Your mail box - Options - Change - Connection definitions - E-mail inbox - Access point - WLAN;
The names coulb be diferent, because I mada a free tradution from my phone language.

Does your WLAN access point work (try it with the web browser)

I have not set up an Access Point Group.

Another thing that Nokia needs to fix, the email app doesn't allow you to select an access point group.

Settings > E-mail > (select an account) > Connection settings >
You can then configure the access points for incoming and outgoing separately.

If you mean to indicate that using access point group does not work on
the E70, I can tell you that it works for me at least.

Quite practical, if I check email around my house, it will use the WLAN, otherwise it will go for GPRS connection. I did struggle a bit before
understanding the setup, especially since I had to use different
SMTP servers for the GPRS and the internet provider for outgoing
mail. But the E70 can even do that!

I am not sure what it was I had problems with in the beginning,
but there was something with the sequence of doing things. Suggest
trying to create an access group first, and then play around with
a dummy email account created afterwards.

Thanks for your help. I have been able to now specify which access point is used for a connection.

However, one issue I notice is that the WLAN connection appears to have a very short range, much less than my notebook PC. It seems that if I am beyond 3 meters from the wireless router, I likely won't get a connection. Is this normal? If so, it would seem to make the WLAN function of limited usefulness.

Thanks again.
