Built-in Navigator

Hello! It's been a long time since I've posted here. My E61 is still going great. But the joystick seems to be growing weak.. Ok, lets get back to the title.

I've been thinking of getting the Nokia LD-3W Bluetooth GPS Module. Has anyone tried using this bluetooth gps with the built-in navigator? How does it it function? Is it nice?

And also, I don't seem to be able to find a dealer for this product in India. If anyone knows, please let me know. Otherwise I'll have to get it from outside India.

Thank you!

My experience is with others S60 devices and LD-1W. Works well do exactly what is expected to do.

Cool. Thanks. In some sites, it says LD-1W is discontinued. Is it true? I like the feature of the external antenna in the LD-1W.

It might be discontinued as there are newer Nokia GPS units now, but you should be able to get them on eBay.

Yes, may be... Because now, on sales is LD-3W, so LD-1W, may be discontinued.

😃 Not to hijack this thread, but does the E62 work with say a Palm Bluetooth GPS unit? I ask this since I already have a Palm with the external GPS unit and am receiving the E62 within the next few days.

Unless you have additional coordination programs, the built in Navagator program is pretty useless. It gives you Long/Lat position and speed. That's about it 😊

The brand is not important. The specifications of bluetooth are. So if is a "normal" bluetooth GPS unit, it works.

Hello DavidT.. Well, I can't find any mapping app with maps available for India yet. Its there for Pocket PC, but not for 3rd Edition S60. Long/Lat position, Avg Speed etc are all nice for basic features! When the app comes out, i'll get it!

Hello nj7. I couldn't find maps available there for India. And oh yeah, I found VistoMaps or something that gives Indian maps for around $4, for its not really that detailed. Just lines. And its only for interstate. City maps isn't viewed properly. So I'll wait for some more time and then get a good software. However, is it possible to somehow use the maps used in PocketPC in the 3rd edition s60. Because my country has just launched the HP iPaq 6965 which comes with a built-in gps module. And they have so perfect maps of interstate as well as perfect city maps! I would love to get those maps for 3rd edition s60.. 🙄 😃

Hello nj7. Haven't tried it! But I can wait for a good app to come with perfect maps of India. I'll still hang out with this built-in Navigation app and the GPSJ app which is also good!

Hello nj7. I tried this MG Maps last night and it had indian maps allright, but only in Google Satellite view. Its a nice application tho! I really hope a proper application will come out for the 3rd edition S60 platform and with good indian road maps. 🙄 My hope is up!

I think, that it have an option, on Menu, to show only map view and not sattelite view. Not sure, because I dont have it installed on my phone to test, but see if is like that or not.

Hello nj7. Yes, I saw the options. Only few roads is shown in MSN Roads or something for my city/province. I hope it'll improve soon! Thanks anyway!

Update:

Finally I got myself the Nokia LD-3W Bluetooth GPS. I'm in love with it. Presently using the navigator and Sports Tracker. Its really so nice!

hi there.

I have Nokia E50 and there is a Built Navigator.
I just moved to Canada and Navigation System would help me a lot.

Can somebody tell me how this works ?
Is it something like Tom-Tom Navigator or...?
Also do I need additional hardware (eg GPS Bluetooth Receiver)?

I look forward to hear from anyone 😊

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Firstly, you should all download the free smart2go application and the companion map loader. This will give you (free) maps for most of the world on your device so you can atleast find your way around.

You will need a memory card on your device, and depending how many maps you want, one with considerable free space (recommend a 512 card minimum).

If you need 'live' tracking, then you need a GPS device. Any bluetooth GPS reciever will work.

With the smart2go application, you only need to pay if you need turn-by-turn directions and audible hints ("Turn left in 300 yards" etc.)

It already has various POI (Points of Interests) like gas stations and hospital locations.

Make sure your card is formatted using the smallest sector size possible and preferably use FAT32. Factory formatted cards are wholly unsuitable because 20MB worth of maps will take over 400MB of storage space on the card.

On a linux machine I use

mkfs.vfat -n noddy -F 32 -S 512 /dev/sdb1
Now the same 20MB worth of maps 'only' take 80MB of storage space.

Hey can you help me out here. I'm usin E70 and LD-3W. I cant get the tracker to connect with my GPS? When I start a run, theres just a red gps sign on the screen and nothing happens.

For example tomtom connects and finds satellites just fine.

This would be a perfect app for me. What am I doing wrong here?

Hello mtlman. Nice to hear that you also got Nokia LD-3W. Well, when it shows a red gps sign on the screen, it means that the satellite link hasn't been acquired yet. If you wait for a few minutes, you will see it turn to yellow, and a pop up comes up saying ''Searching satellites''. Then shortly it'll turn green after making successful link with satellites. It takes a while though. Depends on the start, i.e. cold start, warm start or hot start.

Hey

Thanks for your answer. I thought I waited long enough cos I had it on me when I was running for about 30min. I tried and tomtom found the gps in a few seconds. I will have to keep trying. Did a fresh install just now and no help.

Hope I get this to work cos its really a killer app!!
