Being an impatient type I took my N80 apart to change the housing, apparently successfully as the phone itself works fine when put back together but...
...the camera button on the side no longer responds (though the microswitch is making contact) and the blue LED doesn't flash when the phone enters sleep mode (which some may say is a blessing!)
I've checked it all very carefully and just can't see anything broken, damaged or not making contact so I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what I've managed to do here?

Thanks but I already tried that. I'm wondering if maybe my problem isn't that I've broken something but it's using ropey old Hong Kong housings from eBay, since the camera button and LED are on different boards and rely on the rear housing and 'middle part' respectively. It would seem like amazing bad luck if I'd wrecked these two items, on two boards, with no visible damage, but leaving the phone otherwise fully functional.
Thinking aloud here but any other input is welcome.
Did you replace the front and rear housing? I just finished re-assembling mine after tightening up the sliders with a tiny strip of tape on the metal slider (worked excellent, no tape is visible). To do this I had to unplug the screen and the other main electrical connector. The only thing I can think of is that on of these connectors came undone partially while you were working. You could go back in and just press firmly on both of them to make sure they are fully seated.
