One hell of a problem

OK, so I just did the v4 upgrade using the software updater, all good. One problem, and its a doozy. I left my memory card in when I did the update (my brother did and it worked alright for him, although he later informed me he doesnt have much installed on there, whereas I do). Anyway, now every time I restart (or put the mem card back in), it says "Installing" for about 3 minutes while it tries to instll suff from the memory card. After that time it fails and says "Unable to install remaining applications, to install go to Application Manager".

Problem #1 - I got to App. Manager (which take AGES to load), and it lists a whole heap of jibberish programs (like 20003cfb.sis and the like) which say "Not installed". 20003cfb.sis is the first in the list, I cant delete it so I try to install it. It asks me if I want to Install KeypadLock? I say yes. Bang, File Corrupted! So I thought I would format the mem card from the phone.

Problem #2 - I copied everything on my card across to a folder on my PC with the intention of formatting the card. "Unable to format memory card, card in use by another application". (There is nothing running, I'm guessing the thing thats trying to install when I boot up is still running somewhere). So, I thought I would format on the PC using the card reader.

Problem #3 - It does weird stuff here, it tells me the card capacity is 3.83GB (its 2GB), I try to go ahead anyway. No can do. Write protected. Wtf?

So I just manually delete everything using PC Suites File Manager. Its all gone now except a folder called "Data" (can't be deleted). Which has a sub folder called "NEF" in it, in there is a file called NEFConfig.xml and another folder called "Log". Thats it. Interestingly my Java progs are still showing up as installed in App manager (but they arent working). So I try to format again both ways.

Problem #4 - Still nothing, cant do it. How do I stop it trying to install these non-existant programs?!

Software updater never told me I ad to rmove my card which makes this all the more frustrating.

I think that cvers everything Ive tried to date. Ive been at it a while now, any ideas would be appreciated.

I had a similar issue when starting up after teh upgrade, all I did was stick teh memory card in a usb card reader and remove teh files that way, had no problems since.

when i reformated my phone i had simply backed up contacts on outloock then reformated, it had the same problem, it looks like installed programs on the card on v3 have parts on the phone! i eventually fixed it by browsing for the files it was moaning about and deleting them (on the card) then reinstalling everything! -next time i will do a backup to the card then should be able to reinstate everything from there.

did you backup to card before doing the upgrade? (it does say to on the installer)

Thats really annoying that it installs part on the phone even though you select Mem card! To answer your question, I did do a backup from phone to the PC, then did it all back again after the upgrade, I must have stuffed it up coz it didnt help.

I have found that reinstalling the progs one by one overwrites those "broken" installer files, i just had to find what they were. I did this by getting ready to install the "Not installed" file to find out which program it belonged to. Only problem is there is one left (called a0000c98.sis) that doesnt do anything when I attempt to install it, so I don't know which program it corresponds to, therefore I dont know which program to install over it. And this file seems to be keeping me from still using my phone to format the mem card (same problem as before). The good news is that it doesnt attempt the "installing" after a reboot now, but still, I was hoping to just do a full wipe of phone and memory card after going to V4.

On a side note, how do I do a soft/hard reset? Whats the difference between the 2? And will this affect the memory card?

Aside from that, how do I track down this a0000c98.sis on my memory card to delelte, I'm buggered if I can find it.

Thanks!

plug you phone in to the pc via the data cable and select data transfer mode, make sure you set the folder options on the pc to view hidden files then do a search for it.

(sorry thats not a step by step guide but it gives you an idea, Ive not got time to do step by step and i dont know what OS you have)

I have the same probelm, I'm just waiting for version 5, coz i cant format my memory card either

I tried the Data Transfer mode. I cant access it anymore, I get the same message saying the card is in use. The only way I can get on the card on the PC is through the PC Suite file manager. I can't believe what a problem this is.

Is there any way I can find out what program this a0000c98.sis is referring to?

to the person that deleted the files with a usb card reader, how did you locate the files in order to delete them? Thanks

Do you have messages set to store in the Memory Card or in the Phone?

You cannot start data transfer mode when messages are stored in Memory Card, so you should change message memory to PHONE whenever you want to use Data Transfer mode.

Hope this info helps.

Good question. I cant work it out either. Without data transfer mode I'm unable to search the phone in the normal way. And PC Suite doesnt seem to show everything, just what it wants to.

I checked, its the phone. I cant think of anything else that could be keeping a link to the memory card open. Im 99% sure its this a0000c98.sis file thats causing the problem, but I guess it could be something else. I'm fast running out of ideas though.

slammin, I use linux, its very good at ignoring hidden markers etc.

Re memory card in use, One thing I found occasionally under windows is that it gets confused about what state that the connection is in. try rebooting the PC and restarting the phone and try again.

ok i'm gonna do it tonight, i havent actually tried it yet apart from with y browser. So all i do is put it in my card reader an search for the file i know i'm looking for?
