End of Tomtom for s80?

I went on to Tomtom's site a few days a go and noticed that the latest versionof software they are showing is Navigator 6 for the s60 3rd edition phones. Does this mean the end on the line for s80? No more map updates etc?

I sincerely doubt thats Tomtom will be phasing out their support for S80.

I do see the point in them focusing on S60 since this is by far the most popular Nokia platform, so it makes good business sense to put new releases out for S60 before S80. But there are factors that make it unlikely that will not do S80 as well.

- It is relatively simple (= cheap) for them to convert a S60 application to S80.

- S80 devices are generally more expensive than S60 and people who owns them tend to be more inclined to purchase expensive software like Tomtom.

So I wouldnt worry...

Maybe is only temporary... but how many S80 devices are sold? And, how many S60 are sold? If was me, I dont care about S80, only S60, because business is business...

If only Nokia would promote the Series 80 PDA's, not just ignore them.
It would not take much for them to take some of the WM5 market, in my opinion.

I moved from a 9500 due to size and speed to a N70 but found that the applications available were always not quite as good.
Then I moved to SE M600i which will be a good phone in a year or two, currently the built in Spreadsheet hates anything older than Office 2003 and make spreadsheets that have been through the phone unusable, and the phone contacts do not transfer correctly.
So I'm coming back to the N9300, if only it could be promoted correctly then Nokia would feel more like spending money on upgrading to 3G.

P.S. Tom Tom on a reasonable screen size is one of the reasons I'm coming back, WM5 devices are shrinking like Alice in Wonderland!

Steve.

I'm still waiting for the replacement to the 9500 (9300i is not a replacement),

I would expect that s80 development has stopped now,

s60 devices are coming out 19 to the dozen,

I'm not as keen on the s60 UI,

Things I like about the 9500 are the keyboard and the widescreen,

Carl,

You could be waiting quite a while, I think the 9500 has only been around for roughly 2 years which for communicators is a short shelf life.

I know there are rumours around about a new device but I suspect these are started by people hoping rather than based upon any device, hopefully I'm wrong and they are right.

My other worry is if there are no 'official' rumours so far we could be waiting a while, when the 9500 was initially announced I think it took nearly 12 months to actually appear.:icon13:

Steve.

I was hoping something might be in the works for the end of november show. But I suppose Steve is right, 9300i is only one year old and S60 (mainly N** but also E**) are pushed more than Communicators

I apologise for my earlier comments I'd not done my research.

Knowing Nokia it could still take a while for anything to reach actual production.:icon4:

I'm not convinced of your argument. Yes, business is business, but Nokia has been known to not only make products for the mass market. They also make prestige products - phones that may not earn them tons of money, but still serve to strenghten the brand by their existence and positive press coverage. The N93 for instance.

I am not saying that that is all the Communicator series is, since I am quite certain that Nokia makes good money from them - albeit not as much as from their more "broad" designs. But the devices are also widely recognized as great engineering feats and has high prestige value - both for Nokia as a leading phone manufacturer and the people using them (if you flip out a Communicator at a business meeting, people will imediately notice you as being "somebody". There is hardly a device with a higher cool-factor.... 🙄 ).
