Mine does the same, although very little, it's really not that noticable
You are supposed to switch off your phone when you charge it. Apparently it damages the battery.
No need to switch off the phone when charging. There should not be any display flickering when charging; either the phone is broken, the charger is broken, or something's wrong with the electricity supply to the charger.
The last two can be eliminated by using a different charger and trying to charge in some other location (use a different wall socket, different room, different building).
Mine does the same - it's like a feint pulsing of the display brightness when it's charging, with a frequency of about once per second.
I've never worried about it.

You're supposed to remove the battery before charging the phone. It can damage it otherwise.
For the record, mine does this too. Ah well.

Hi,
I have owned 3 N80's all of which had a minor flicker when charging. It's nothing to worry about and barely noticeable. This does not indicate a fault, and there is no need to power off any mobile phone when charging it.
However, your advice about trying charging in another room or a different socket is very good advice. Thanks.

Hi,
I am confused, how can you charge the battery if it's removed from the handset, and you are using the standard supplied Nokia charger?
