Help!! Bloody T-Mobile put their own firmware on my E61 (one week old) and its version 1.0610.04.04 - I cannot update this via Nokia's Software Updater as it says no new update available (!!) and T-Mob say they don't have an update and I have to contact Nokia!?#*&!
There must be other users in the same boat as me - how did you resolve this?
Its made me very loathe to ever get an upgrade from T-Mob again - I'd rather just buy the phone than it get it with their own firmware which you can't upgrade and their useless tech support staff say 'I've never had this problem reported before'!

A rule of thumb when buying a smartphone that you actually intend to use as a smartphone is to always buy it SIM-free. This might cost you more at first (but you can cover the extra cost by either selling their "free" phone" or getting a SIM only contract which should be much cheaper than a contract bundled with a "free" phone) but at least you won't have to suffer from buggy custom firmwares, disabled features, firmware updates available months after they've been released or even never available, phone locked to just one network...
Right now, you're pretty much stuck. The only safe option you have (short of trying to flash your phone yourself using illegal software) is to try and see if a Nokia service center will not install a generic firmware on it (if they do accept to do this, you may have to pay for it).
Otherwise, since it's only 1 week old, you could try to sell it on eBay (if it's locked, see if T-Mobile can supply you with an unlocked code) and buy a SIM-free version instead.
If you still have the option to return it to T-Mobile, you could do that then either:
- tell them that you don't want to new phone and negociate a better deal with them. The money you'll save every month will partially cover the price of a SIM-free handset
- get the most expensive phone they offer for free (check the completed items on eBay for the actual price the phones are sold at), sell it on eBay (since it'll be new unlike your E61, you should get a very good price for it) then buy an E61 SIM-free.
All that said, quite frankly there isn't really any need to upgrade the firmware unless you've got a specific problem that has been solved in the new firmware. I've upgraded the firmware 2 weeks ago and the only change i've seen so far was the better font in messaging. Not such a big deal. Apart from that, the new firmware introduces a whole new major bug which makes keyboard shortcuts not work anymore in the menu and several other applications unless you press and hold the blue key, which obviously isn't an option on a one-handed device such as the E61 (technically, it's apparently a bug-fix rather than a bug but as far as i'm concerned, it's a bug, and a big one: it worked before and it doesn't work anymore now).
hey thanks a lot. I'll definitely follow your advice and never get a network phone again! The main reason I want the latest firmware is:
1. because its the latest and according to the list of things it fixes that I saw somewhere, it seemed quite substantial
2. to get the Truphone voip client installed, they require you to be on the latest firmware....

That's actually the reason why i upgraded myself since i was otherwise perfectly happy with firmware v1. But then, i never got truphone to work (i still hope to get it to work though, must be something with my D-Link router, the truphones guys asked me to drop them an email and they'd help me but i didn't took the time to do it yet).

VoIP and t-mobile, eh? I presume you're not on a Walk'n'web tariff that prohibits VoIP?
Robert
capitaine,
Be careful. Even if you have an unbranded/unlocked phone you may not necessarily be able to upgrade. See
http://www.mobilevoipforum.org/archive/index.php/t-22.html
BTW I dont habe the right firmware for Truphone but I managed to get the VoIP offering from aql.com working on my phone. (almost -- sometimes need to reboot the phone to get the SIP registration working).
Thanks for that link. Looks like my product code (0537400) isn't even on there.

actually only partly:
1. If you took out a web'n'walk before the new policy you are still subject to the T&Cs at the time you took it out. And can NOT upgrade, unless you end the contract and start a new one (I confirmed this with tmobile).
2. VOIP is still banned on tmobile basic data and web'n'walk packages. However you can buy a data contract called 'MAX' from tmobile that allows VOIP, but note that it costs 45 a month
sorry to be a downer 😞
