N80 with 4Gb MiniSD ?? Anyone tried yet ?

10 replies · 5,079 views · Started 26 October 2006

I see more and more 4Gb miniSD cards being advertised on places like ebay - has anyone bought and tried one yet ?

My 2Gb card is bulging at the seams

IIRC the N80 will only accept 2GB cards at present. And the chances are that the 4GB ones you're seeing on ebay are lemons. It's too soon for them to be reputable.

i remember reading something about there is an issue with the 4gb ones using a slightly different protocol, so it is most likely new firmware would be needed.

I think the same. The 4Gb miniSD are HC! New standard not compatible with existing one and with the current phones.

it wont happen coz s60 uses FAT 16 file system and FAT 16 can only be used upto a max of 2gig, so if we wanted a 4gig card it wont be pos coz the 4gig card wud need to be formated with FAT 32 file system and s60 wnt run it.

What filesystem does the N91 use then? It has a 4 GB disk (even 8 in the upcoming model).

Edit: According to Wikipedia, Symbian OS does support FAT32.

4GB miniSDs were only announced by SanDisk last month (September). They announced that they were going to release them to hardware manufacturers shortly - this is so manufacturers can test compatibility and build new devices with 4gb miniSD capability. They haven't been released to the consumer market AFAIK.

The eBay cards are fraudulent - many of the products are badly photoshopped 2gb cards, some are compressed by dodgy means - I've reported a number of sellers for this type of behaviour. If you buy one now of eBay expect it to fail badly assuming it's even recognised by the phone.

AFAIK N80 does not support 4gb miniSDs at this time although it may be able to do so with a subsequent firmware update.

My advice would be to hold off until:
1. 4gb miniSDs are being stocked by reputable suppliers (then get one via a known and trusted seller on eBay
2. Nokia or another trusted party have confirmed 4gb compatibility via firmware change log or other authenticated source..

Wikipedia may be a useful source but it is not authoritative - there's no test of knowledge required to edit articles, you simply have to be able and willing to do so 😉
Edit: 4gb miniSDs require SDHC capabilities which are not supported by current miniSD devices: http://uk.gizmodo.com/2006/09/13/sandisk_4gb_minisd_sdhc_card_n.html

Well, N91 has to support FAT32 anyway to be able to fully use the 4GB/8GB disk?

I tried formatting a 128 MB memory card to FAT32 (through usb, the card was in the N80) and guess what? IT WORKS.
Windows now reports the filesystem as FAT32 when mounted as usb mass storage, and the card seems to work fine. I shit you not.

ur the first person who got it to work pal, ppl on howard forums have tried and faild, it broke 1 guys mini sd card, but it must work then so god knows what theyr on about lol

Also N-Gage works with 4Gb cards, so should be FAT32. Only doubt is that the announced 4gb cards are HC... not compatible with actual cards.
