TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 for S60 3rd Edition

Steve's been driving around with the very latest version of TomTom's satellite navigation application for (most) S60 3rd Edition smartphones. Here's the full review.

Read on in the full article.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the review. Good to see TomTom finally catching up. I'm still using an ancient version of TT on an old Dell Axim X5 PocketPC with a (now ever increasingly dubiously) wired GPS receiver; it's getting horribly out of date and really needs replacing. The price of Mobile v6 + BT GPS looks more appealing than a standalone TomTom 510, for instance, but has the disadvantage that I won't want to let my other half borrow it when he's going somewhere without me 😮. On the other hand, I wouldn't have to take anything else (apart from the tiny BT GPS receiver) with me to avoid getting lost on foot. And believe me, with MY sense of direction, I'd take it!

Which of your collection of devices have you tried it on?

You mention that "However, it didn't like the landscape mode of the N93 or E70 ..." which is fine (I never could see the point in landscape screens for mapping / routing info, when portrait seems more appropriate to see as far ahead as possible). Are those the only two you tried? Or did TomTom waive their usual "no more than 2 devices in 6 months" rule for you?

Is the display genuinely usable on a screen that small in real life use in a vehicle? And how good was the volume of the spoken directions on each device (without re-routing through car audio)?

Thanks
Julie

P.S. If anyone wants to see a bit more of the (previous version) user interface, there's an alternative review of version 5 at http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-mobile-5.php

I only tried it on the N93 and E70 as they were the only two 3rd Edition devices here at the moment. TomTom would have given me other codes if I'd needed them, I'm sure, they always quite helpful to reviewers.

Yes, portrait's fine for me, and quite usable, even on the E70. Most of the time I was relying on the voice though - volume was quite sufficient, I had it on 90% most of the time.

Steve

It's a must-have application for s60 3rd...
Unfortunatelly its Central Europe Maps are only 40% detailed, but it could help without detailed routes on the the map to find the main roads...
Some city/village map is not up-to-date too, but the application core is great!
Simple user interface, fast rendering, good gps handling...

Thanks for the review, Steve.
It's great on the E61:
- Mapping outside the home country is a lot more comprehensive than I was expecting (ie. 'major roads of Western Europe'😉. It had roads for all the suburbs, small villages, ski resorts etc. that I tried.
- Your earlier review, Steve, of TomTom on Series 80 mentioned some shortcuts: 'c' still toggles night colours on and off. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way of toggling between 3D and map view. It used to be 'tab' but the E61 doesn't have a tab key....
- The only bug I have found is that the display of Contacts mixes the names up for some reason. A minor problem and should be easily fixed by an update.

HELP!!

I recieved TomTom 6 for my Nokia E61 yesterday and I can't find a way to type @. The default key combination for this in finnish localized E61 is "blue+w" and it doesn't work with TomTom. I only wish I could log into PLUS-services...

There is another annoying thing as I can't find a way to type capitalized letters when naming my favorite spots, but that's not near as big problem as is the missing @-sign.

=)juha

Yap,
This is big problem with Tomtom on Nokia E61 you cant Operate Blue Keys as Bcoz of that you cant type into Tomtom
so its not easy to surf on Map without such IMP keys on Keypad??

If someone found anything on this one please post it here

otherwise tomtom operation is reallly great with E61

Thanks to Tomtom and Nokia

Have you checked TomTom's website at www.tomtom.com? You can select a country and get a list of suppliers if TomTom don't sell direct in Oz. If there's nothing there, then I'd guess you're on a loser.
As far as I can make out, you can buy Australian maps for Navigator 6 direct from TomTom, but I can't see a way to buy Navigator 6 itself in Oz - at least not directly from TomTom - they only list the TomTom GO and ONE products.

Try some of the suppliers listed in the Where to Buy tab. For instance, http://www.ja-gps.com.au/ (picked at random from the list) sell Navigator6 bundled with IPaqs, so maybe they can at least tell you whether it's possible to buy just the Navigator software and maps without hardware to go with it?

If all else fails, you could always (ahem) try TomTom Support 😉
