HELP!!! e62 + tomtom 6

10 replies · 3,892 views · Started 31 October 2006

i just installed tomtom 6 on my e62 device... everything is working fine except for 2 things... a major issue and a minor one..

the major one is that the back light stays OFF ALL THE TIME. i tried every possible setting and no way to turn the back light on while using tomtom.

the minor issue is the keypad. it thinks i don;t have a querty keyboard.

is it a wrong version of tomtom that i have for my phone?
some help please?

Update
Found the threat about the work around.
thanks

Download S60SpotOn. It's a free application that heeps the backlight on. It's available on most Symbian sites.

SpotOn doesn't work correctly on Tomtom 6. It only stays on for 4 seconds and cycles on and off...really annoying. Here is what everyone is doing (I got this from theredshark)

1>Start TT
2> Goto Backlight prefs.
3> Set it to "When not charging" and click done. Unplug charger if it was plugged in.
4> Now wait for the blacklight to shutoff and wait a little more, for the screen saver to activate (The one with the date and time).
5> Once the screen saver activates move the joystick, TT should now come back with the backlight fully on.
6> go back and set Backlight prefs. too what ever you want.
7> It seems you need to do this every time you start TT.

However, I've found that even with that; the backlight stays on for 15-20 minutes and turns off. To turn it back on again, you have to redo those steps again. :icon13: I hope Tomtom comes out with a patch soon.

well. i am using an official activated copy. but tomtom nor nokia are that good for support. that is of course in my opinion.

i did try spoton and yes... it flashes evey 3 to 4 secs.
the workaround with the backlight setting is what i have been doing since... it works great.

thanks everyone.

Officially, TomTom don't count the E62 as compatible, you know.... Now, the curious thing is that the E61 IS supported, and I'd have thought they worked the same in this instance..... Very strange. Keep at them!

So on the e61 TomTom has the same issue (backlight off)?

I was thinking of buying TomTom mobile, but with that sort of trouble? Is there anything comparable to TomTom?

truetype, there are a number of applications like TomTom. I use Wayfinder, there is also Route 66, Navicore, Nav4All (a free product/service until 2008) as well as others. I have not used TomTom but it's supposed to be the best. There is a review on this site by Steve Litchfield, posted just a few days ago that was very good, you should read it.

One other thing, there are basically two models that navigation applications follow. In one (TomTom, Route 66) the maps are on a CD or on a memory card or even on your computer and you download the ones you want to your phone. The other model (Wayfinder, Nav4All) maps are downloaded when you connect to the service. All route calculations are made on the server computers and downloaded to the phone. I like this model because your phone is not full of maps but if you don't have an unlimited data plan (which I do) it could get expensive. Also, if you go off route and cannot make a data connection, a recalculation of the route is not possible. There are pros and cons of both methods. Try Nav4All (as it's free); Wayfinder also has a 5 day free trial. I'm not certain about the others.

i have an even better and fast solution, when you open up the program and press accept and it displays the map try this:

press the blue key + Own, to bring up your "own menu"

press the blue key + Own again to escape from the "own menu" and return back to the tomtom program, it should now be lit up!

Unfortunately there is no point in "keeping at them".
Tomtom support are under strict instructions : if it is not listed as compatible, they will not support it. It may work but they wash their hands from it.
I have (had) exactly the same problem with 9300i (not supported, when the 9300 is) and spoke at lenght with TT support, arguing that I had purchased the thing in good faith (some sites say "compatible with S80" without being specific), to no avail.

Got the thing to work but thanks to different forums and not to TT.
(still a brilliant product though)

I have just got Tom Tom on my E62....same issue with the backlight. I followed DriveThruRecFan's process, which worked, until my E62 communicated with the network, then the backlight would go off again.

I have just installed the Profimail email client, and now when the mail notification icon is displayed my TomTom's backlight stays on no matter what! Seems it just needs the focus to remain on the screen!

Hope this helps....BTW the Profimail client is great too!
