If I update with firmware will this improve the picture quality and eliminate the high noise levels, the fringing and blocky-look of pics???
Or this is a structural issue with the hardware?
I know you shouldn t expect that much of a 3 mill pics camera module especially mounted on a phone, but I have a 3 mill pic cam and it produces far far better results than the N93
I dont want to completely trash the N93, its ok, Video capture on the N93 is sound.....
It depends... if the problems are hardware, nothing to do. It can have bat lens, bad CMOS processor... if is the case, the camera is lost. If the problems are mainly by firmware reasons, on that case a new firmware version can bost the camera quality. Because a regular 3MP camera is able to produce good photo quality.
been using v20.0.058 since last week and image quality is the same IMO.
Camera setting: Night

Camera Setting: Automatic

Outside/daylight shooting is obviously better which i will no longer attached.
Yup. still pic quality has not improved with the v20 firmware.
This issue has been debated so many times with most every phone that has lesser image quality than the other. The big question is: how much actually lies in software and what limits does the hardware make?
I'd love to read an in depth interview with the involved designers at Nokia, speaking about the design issues and goals, the possible conflict in movie/still optimization, pinpointing the firmware/hardware differences between different models, and thier response to the wide spread theory of deliberately making one model better/worse than the other to sell more models.
Or is there such an article/interview out there? Something for the peeps at AAS maybe?
is there any fix yet for the pic quality? i just got my n93 a few days ago and i realize that the pic quality on my n73 is better than n93!
my pics were grainy and its annoying me!
Looks like it can be as the N93i has the same hardware but produces better pictures due to the improved software used.

true, n73 picture quality is better (imaging phone) than n93 (video phone).
i just use NoiseNinja on Mac OS X to remove noise on pictures taken with my n93. not too sure if nokia will again release a new firmware too soon.
my other phone, which is a Motorola A1200 (aka MotoMing) produces better image than N93 in terms of noise.

Having now extensively tested the N73, N93 and N93i, I'd like to state that:
1) the N93 has a better camera than the N73, but suffers from poor camera firmware, meaning that images are plagued with lots of natural photo-site noise and compression artefacts. In most light conditions, the N73 will appear to give the better results. In very bright light conditions, the N73's camera optics show their limitations, with picture bleed etc.
2) the N93i has different firmware in its camera module, applying significant noise reduction (a.k.a. blurring!), to make the photos look smoother, a la the N73. But you don't get any more detail - if anything you get less, because real detail will have been blurred slightly along with the noise/artefacts.
So each device has its pros and cons, the perfect camera-toting Symbian OS smartphone hasn't yet been made - though I'm eagerly awaiting my N95, of course!!! 8-)

At least you have 4 different ISO settings with the N95, something the N93 should have had. I will certainly be comparing the N93 & N95 in this area when I get my N95.
I know this has probably been said before... but what I don't get is why the cheaper N73 I bought for my sister which is also a much more petite phone.. takes better photos than my huge N93 which I have to lug around! I would've expected them to be at least on par.
On a sidenote, with regards to the N73/N93i having that blurring technology; is it possible to do a similar thing using a computer program (eg. Photoshop)?
