New Nokia E61i
It's nice to see the joystick replaced, it's the one part of the E61 that annoys me.
I don't know what could be added to the E61 though, apart from the camera.
the whole idea of not having a camera is so you can use your workgroup phone in the workplace without having to give it to security because the company have a R&D policy of no camera phones!!
maybe some clever person will come up with an aftermarket frontcover and keyboard to replace the joystick seeing i can envisage the letters rubbing off of the keyboard!!
smallboy, you are exactly correct in regards to a camera on an business phone. I waited for the E series phones to come out (I have an E60 and my business partner has an E61) for exactly the reason that you stated. I'm a Nuclear Engineer and many of the places that I go do not allow camera phones for security reasons. Nokia seems to be one of the few (if not the only) companies that understand this concept.

Yes but you have to understand that other people (like me) really like the full keyboard and wifi. Thats why I have an E61 but what I really mis are camera(s) for pictures and or videocalling.
If we can dream loudly they can even put a gps module in the phone.
And also a FM radio like on a lot of nokia phones would be great
@smallboy, I indeed noticed that the letters seems to go off the keys. I hope it don't get worse, what letters are rubbing off at your phone. I got trouble with the N,M and H (if the backlight is off you see them grey instead of black)
hi liquid,
no keys as yet but then my phone is only 3 weeks old!!
as far as gps goes i got mine as an upgrade on 3 with tomtom and the gps reciever is small, and i have installed the s60 internet radio app from nokia to listen to internet radio stations.
I frequent e-series.org and have loads of articles and themes for the E series, I get a daily newsletter and this may be of interest talking of keyboards..

ps. i am in no way affiliated with them..yet you never know..

Agree😉 If that one, could have also FM Radio and an VGA Screen, would be nice!

I'm not sure if GPS and FM tuners would be suitable for a model aimed at the business market though.
More logical would be to leave the E61 as it is, no camera or other consumer features, and do a consumer equivalent of the E61 with the whole shebang, call it something like the N61 or whatever.

Haven't had any trouble with mine yet.
complete agree with Krisse.
1. Camera. Maybe have a consumer version but completely useless for me. Just would make it bigger and more expensive.
2. Thinner. Would be nice, but E61 is so thin, really not a priority
3. An FM Radio wouldn't be a bad idea. Always interested to hear the news.
4. The joystick actually works very well. I would prefer a trackball (like the BB Pearl/8100). The only thing I don't like about the joystick is that it wobbles a bit.
5. A VGA screen ? This is a difficult one. I used to have a HTC Universal (XDA Exec) and its just too big (as well as sluggish). If you incorporate a VGA screen in the E61's current dimensions, text would be too small to read and otherwise it would be useless. If you increased screen size to accommodate you are at risk of crossing the thin line between tiny/highly useful with bulky/need to think about taking.
Am I saying the E61 is perfect for a small email/IM/web communicator ? Yes, pretty much. If I want a full web experience I would get a Sony TX3 or take my current 12" MSI1013. If I want a small phone, I'll just go out with my Motorola V3i. If I go to work or on holiday and want a tiny device that keeps me in touch and takes my phone calls, nothing comes close to the E61 ......
I get an E61 in October and they're announcing a replacement in November! I hope this isn't going happen every time I get a new Nokia device. After being a Treo user and experiencing Palm's glacial progress, this will take some getting used to!
Stick in HSDPA though and they'll have my attention.
... and if the add a SiRFstarIII chip they'll have a definite sale!
Anyone know what GPS chip is in the N95?

You know guys, the number of organisations which doesn't allow cameras through the door is actually very small compared to the number of businesses that exist in the UK.
Of course it's good that Nokia makes phones without cameras for those of you that work for (or with) a company that has a "no camera" policy, but there are an awful lot of business people out there (me included) who would welcome a nice qwerty format smartphone which also allows the user to take the odd snap.
By the way, I was looking for an E61 today and a hell of a lot of retailers are out of stock. Almost like the stock levels have been deliberately run down...
I just sell my E70 and brought a new E61 to replace it.
I do think the camera built in mobile phone is not very useful as when I using my previous E70, I seldom use the camera and although the internal memory of E70 is the same as E61, but I found that the speed of E61 is much faster than E70. I think it is because the camera drain up much of the memory.
The second issue is the battery, I guess that it will drain up the battery fast if it have a camera built inside.
However, I think include FM radio is a good idea but I really hope the so call E61i will support HSDPA.

Funny - I have just switched from an SPV m3100 , and the joystick , single handed page navigation was the very thing that persuaded me to stick with the E61
... Just goes to show how difficult it is to please everyone 😊
