Question???? Why do I get out of memory?

Any help much appreciated,

Jim Godber

Is there something else that I need to?

what firmware do you have, there were issues with the older V3 firmware and out of memory

check with *#0000#

If it isn't an actual issue/bug in the software, you may simply run out of RAM (application run-time memory, not storage).

Symbian has no paging/swapping of memory to disk/storage to simulate more available RAM than is actually available as physical free RAM on the device.

A web page can easily be too big to fix the finite/fixed size available to display it.

Do you have an URL you can post that others can try to see how big the page really is, and/or how their phones behave with that page/site?

You get the message because you run out of memory 😊

It's not about storage space, but RAM. Restarting the phone might help.

If you are using the Nokia WEB browser, go to settings, and turn off Mini-Map and History-List options. This helps a lot but does not completely solve the problem, as some website with large pages will still run out of memory.

Future handsets like the N95 will include 3 times the internal memory than the current N series handsets, which should cure the problem - but unfortunately that doesn't help all us N80 owners. ;(...

Dez

Good tip and I will try your suggestion, as they say cant hurt, might help

One small point-

I dont want to sound unknowledgeable (stupid), but-
Just how does one get to where I can turn off the mini-map and history list???

I went to settings
Phone
Call
Connection
Date and Time
Security
Divert
Call barring
Network
Enhancements

Which one and then what/

Thanks in advance of any help-

launch "Web", hit "Options", choose "Settings", and you're in the dialog with the "Mini map" and "History list" settings.

I am now the proud owner of a Nokia that is running w/o the mini-map and history. Hopefuly I will now have just a little more memory available.

My initail problem was trying to log onto MSN main page. I came upon a page that must have had 10,000 words of disclaimer and really would need a lawyer to decyher.

I know that I should update my firmware from-

V 3.0617.o6 RM 92 (48.01

I live here in Thailand and am not too sure if I could use the newer firmware
V 4. ?

The out of memory issue was resolved with the firmware that you have so its not really a problem, the main fix with V4 is the bluetooth issue, also for me the web browser with V4 stores usernames and passwords..

Hmmmm- You just answered a question that I haven't even asked yet- I soon would have been very keen about usernames and passwords just as soon as I got logged onto my E-mail account.

I don't want to get too far off the thread but my current main issue is this-

I live in Thailand. Up until a week ago I could get Yahoo email via Nokia N80. Now I am unable to log into yahoo email, just as soon as I hit the sign on key from my home page my.yahoo.com my browser freezes. I went to the service provider here in Bangkok and was told that this is a current problem in the whole country. I have been trying to ascertain if this was actually true or was a service problem. I sent email to Yahoo but have not yet received a reply yet.

Thank you for all the very good advice,

Jim Godber

Hi Cash,

I have the latest V4.0623.0.42 and I still get "memory full" errors in the WEB app when the web page is much over 300Kb-500Kb in size. eBay is particularly bad. I have found that disabling Mini-Map and History help, but don't completely prevent the problem.

Any further ideas?

Dez

To be honest Dez I have never encountered this problem, maybe the sites I visit are not big enough, I will give ebay a try next time I am in a hotspot and see if I get this problem..

I can confirm what Dez says about eBay, which is a real pain for me as it's something I use a lot and it would be rather useful if my 'web enabled' phone actually let me.

God, I'm so bitter! 😉
