I don't *think* it supports animated GIFs. An image that takes up the full screen (208x320) is called a screensaver. GIF, PNG, BMP & JPG are supported in up to 4096 colors.
A logo, which takes up 208x144 (this much of the screen is uncovered with the flip closed) can also be set.
I dont know about the p800,but the 7650 does support animated gifs,it can only loop them one time.There is an app for the 7650 the can loop the gif infinitely.I guess it is the same with the p800
The Screensaver supports animated GIFs.

It's a great phone...
But don't make a mistake, like other people: I don't think you can compare P800 and 7650, the P800 is a PDA with phone functionalities, the 7650 (and S60 future devices) is a phone with PDA capabilities: so compare it with other:
You have a full PDA, a (low res) camera and a phone just in 800$... If you buy a ipaQ, a GPRS jacket and a little SD camera you will spent a lot of money!!!
And, at last, you have Symbian OS...

So you are a developer. I guess, you have some papers about the
P800 hardware. For example, I'm interested in the main core (ARM9).
Currently, I don't know exactly what type of the ARM9 core is inside the
P800. Do you have any glues? BTW; Do you have some public developer
papers you can share, esp. some which describes the embedded structure
of the P800 more in detail??? At least, I want to program same small apps
(mainly mathematical) within assembler and c++. I need low-level
informations.
