The phone is not a router/access point and is not adversising its presensce as one, and unless you run a service like a web server or FTP server that sits and waits for connections, there's nothing to connect to from a PC.

Nokia's mobile web server: http://opensource.nokia.com/projects/mobile-web-server/index.html

Also, the phone doesn't detect your PC as an access point, if your PC hasn't been configured as one. If you want the phone to connect to, e.g., a web server on your PC, then you need to use the PC's IP address, or configure your name server (if you have one), which your phone is using, to do the mapping.

i presume your 'wifi modem' is indeed a router, this is the centre of your network that all things connect to. they can also connect to each other through it.

it is possible to connect your computer and phone directly without using 'ADHoc' (rather than infrastructure) but its messy, and theres no need -you already have them connected through the router you just need to know how to access them!

with your network how you had it you can connect computer to phone and visa versa, its just that it doesnt do it in the way you would expect because its using Universal Plug and Play/ UPnP -do a search on that and it will explain how to connect them.
