Using Cingular Communication manager and the help of tech support to a authorize my connection to use GSM modem to connect, I now can use my E62 to access the internet when hot spots are not available.
My question to to the forum is this. Since I have Blackberry connect with unlimted data plan, will I incur additional charges from Cingular when I use my phone as a modem for my laptop. My initial thoughts were no because I have an unlimted data plan and can surf the web from my phone with no additional charges. So there should not be any diffrerence in using my phone to connect my laptop since data is data and it is going through my phone anyway. But you never know what the service provider has in mind. Feedback please.
Tethering E62 with laptop
Maybe... If the phone connects from one kind of number, like... they are always strange numbers... #91... and when is the PC, the connection of phone is by another number, maybe You gonna be charged! But the network provider shoul have the answer.
I'm in the US with Cingular and also have an unlimited data plan (MediaMax 200) and I can tell you for certain that there is NO additional charge. It makes no difference whether you connect to the Internet from your phone or you connect to the Internet from your laptop through your phone.

if it dials a number like *99# or something similar, you will get charged. it will show up on your bill as internet/Media net pay per use.
Yes from what I have researched tethering your phone connects through a dial up GSM connection using #99* and that's how they identify you as using your phone as a modem to connect to your laptop, thus they got you dead to right.
Using your phone to connect to media net is totally different. I just hope that to do this will only cost me an additional 30 bucks instead of an additional 74.99
Thanks for the feedback
Why don't you connect the laptop to net via PC Suite's One touch access?

not to rain on your parade but i did the same thing, i haev the media max unltd plan for 29.99. used Pc suite to connect to the internet, cingular charged me. 4200KB cost me $42. so im just warning you to be careful.
The sage continues with the tethering issue. Cingular activated my plan from blackberry unlimted data to unlimited data with tethering. Only to find out a few hours later that the E62 would not allow this because it will disconnect your push email capabilites. So I am using Nokia PC suite. to connect with my phone and since I have blackberry connect unlimited data plan for 44.99 I read the last reply where Drive thru Rec got hit for data this way. I am going to see what cingular does with me using Nokia PC suite. Note from what I have read the media max unlimited unlimited plan is different from blackberry connect w/unlimited data plan. One CSR told me they would charge me and another said they wouldnt since I have unlimited data you know how that goes Go figure. I will update this post after I get a couple of bills from cingular.
😎
I'm pretty sure the will charege you. my CSR told me it will and it was additional.. I don't see why we can use tethering if we have unlimited ..I have blackberry connec too
the problem is that with Cingular and the way they have it set up. Even if you want the additonal charge or want the plan they cant give it to you. I tried it. when they put me on the so called additonal plan where I wouldnt be charged, I lost my push email so the blackberry connect plan went out the window. They only have it set up with the 8700c. all other devices wont work. So customers with the E62 cant use blackberry connect with the tethering option. You will either have one or the other.
I'm tethered right now, from a coffee shop in San Francisco. I called help at Cingular and got confirmation that if you have the Unlimited PDA service, then there's no data fee incurred when using the tether. I talked with someone from Cingular's Ashland, Kentucky, office. I figured I'd use the service a lot today, and then call on Monday and confirm there's no fee in my account.
I was told pda unlimited is different than Blackberry Connect unlimted. Do you have push email with your E62. Users of Blackberry Connect cannot use or ad tethering from Cingular. I tried it and it cut off my push email. Finally, are you using PC suite to connect. Let us know on Monday did you get charged. Appreciate the information.:icon14:
Hi. I'm using PDA Unlimited ($39.99), not the Blackberry connect -- I'd read in forums that with Blackberry you cannot tether. I'm using the PC Suite to enable my phone as a modem. I gotta say, this is pretty nifty. For email I've just been using the client that comes with the phone. It ain't great, but it's usable.
I'll check back on Monday and tell y'all if I have any additional data costs on my bill.
Is this 100% certain, that if I install and run the Blackberry connect, then I can't tether? That's really unfortunate, to put it lightly.

I think any any data packge will be charged additional to my understannding when I say chart sheet at cingular retail store..on both blackberry type phone to pda phone..
I used the tether for, like, five hours on Saturday to enable my e62 as a modem connected to my PC (a Fujitsu 15010D). I downloaded MP3s, checked email, surfed the web, etc. I did this from a cafe in San Francisco.
I checked my account on Sunday evening, and the data transfers already appeared in my account, but with no apparent billing against them.
I just called customer service at Cingular and confirmed with them that I incurred no additional fee as a result of the tethering. It's part of my $39.99 PDA Unlimited plan.
Sure, customer service has told me things in the past that haven't been entirely true, so I'll have better assurance when I receive my next bill, but things look good. This is great. The tethering was really excellent. Nice relief that I didn't end up owing a bunch of money as a result.
Now, if we can just sort out a good e62 IM program that doesn't cost as text messaging...

that is great to hear that.. hopely there is no additional charge.. I'm trying to get my mac to work but I may have to call cingular to give some idea..
for IM.. shapeservcies.com will the one but I have working them to make IM that works on cingular. They suppose to let me know if the came out with new revised IM for cingular
I have been tethering my E62 via Nokia PC Suite every day since I got the phone in Mid October. I have PDA Connect at $39.99. I received my latest "Book" I mean Bill from Cingular. It had over 20 pages of data connection listings. All $00.00 was reflected in the "charge" colunm. The only issues I have with any charges at all happened with the pro rating of the bill that Cingular did for the last two weeks of month which was my first two weeks of ownership. I activated the phone on the 17th and they 18 days before my new billing cycle and they charge me $22 bucks for that period. Otherwise, there have been no charges for tethering.
