Not so Mini after all?

I was resisting posting about this because I think they're in danger of complicating the application, but Opera Mini is now up to v3.0, with photo publishing (to an Opera photo server), RSS (news/blogs) and HTTPS (secure site) support, plus various usability improvements. It's still the best way to keep your GPRS bill down though....

Read on in the full article.

When I tried it, it didn't work too well at all on my Sendo-X. I've also now switched to T-mobile, who cap GPRS cost at 1 per day.

I've tried it on my E61 and i have to say that i'm impressed. I usually hate Java applications because of how sluggish they are and how much RAM they use.

The RAM issue is still there in Opera Mini unfortunately but on the speed front, this app blows away any other Java application and even a good number of native apps. Enter a web page address, snap your fingers and it's there. Start scrolling and no matter how complex the page is, everything goes smoothly without any freezes or slow down. Press the Back button and the previous page appears instantly with a really cool sliding effect. Amazing.

Still not for me though. No multiple web page browsing, the fit-to-width rendering renders some web pages hardly readable and i couldn't find a way to disable it and downloading files is clunky as it delegates downloads to Services. But for those looking for a web browser for occasional use or having to browse via an expensive GPRS or 3G connection, this defintely is the ultimate browser.

The three sides of Opera Mini that i appreciate most is:

1. Its free.

2. Is faster than any comparable browser. Actually the new version got even faster than the previous version.

3. It saves a lot on the phone bill. Pages are compressed up to 80 % apparently...

A must try, even if you got a fancy N og E- series Nokia. :icon14:

Hi all,
As I am on Web N Walk Data consumption and speed are not a problem tried this on my M600(now sold) and whilst it is much faster than the normal Opera and i am not fan of either version. IMO the Nokia/Safari browser actually feels like a proper web browser as is also much faster.

In my opinion, the fact that OperaMini 3 is now RSS-capable is enough to discard any other old-style browser for my Communicator. The built-in browser was almost as obsolete as the antique Microsoft Internet Explorer.
