Is it safe to change the phone code

As with any low level tampering with a phone's internals, a certain risk is involved. Whether changing the phones product code invalidates your warranty, I couldn't say with any certainty, but knowing the degree of intricacy of warranties, it probably does.

However, many people have successfully changed their product code to allow them to bypass the restrictive "branded" firmware put in place by network operators. I suppose one could question the legality of that branding and how it is essentially a restrictive and anti competitive process, but that's a whole other argument.

Bottom line is this. Assume that changing your product code does indeed invalidate the warranty, but be safe in the knowledge that many people have successfully done this whilst following the correct instructions. The burden of responsibility is on you and only you can decide 😊

change it then when you have updated the phone change it back does not affect how the phone works

Technically probably not much risk, but you void your warranty. People on here are saying that if you change it back to the original product code then you will be safe, but what happens if you need to send your phone for repair and it has firmware installed that hasn't been published for your handset? They're not stupid, and they are fully aware of people doing this.

Pretty much the reason I have played safe and not bothered. It's a new phone and I've already had to send it back once. Perhaps a few months down the line if no official release is made available then I'll start messing about with it.

I done a search a couple of times, trying to find instructions on how to change the code on the N73 to the N73 ME. I fonnd plenty of posts talking about it, and what codes need to be used, but no instructions on how to do it.

If no one wants to write it out, can someone post the link to instructions on changing the product code.

I followed the instructions and tips found in this thread....

... and all worked like a charm 😊

The codes are in a sticky at the top of this board.

If you change the product code and then change it back to the original one (with a good firmware), is it possible for nokia to see that you've done it (for the warranty)?

Thank you

Yes, because your firmware will not match the product code on the label inside your phone.
