n73 and n80 on three x-series skype?

32 replies · 25,758 views · Started 05 December 2006

has anyone here got an n73 (aswell as an n80) and on the 'three' network? the new xseries (bargain 1gb for 5) tarrif is availiable to n73s only (although you can get it on the n80 if you tell them you use an n73 aswell). but more to the point skype is availiable to download if you log on to three's portal with an n73! see here for details.

can someone with an n73 try and download the app for us!! (its probably not that straight forward or it would have been done but can someone at least try!!)

I have a Nokia N80 which i upgraded to Internet Edition and yesterday i called Three and asked for the X-Series Silver. The guy tried to talk me into getting a different add-on motivating it won't work on my mobile, and that it only works on th N73. Finally i told him I will assume the risks of it not working on my phone and he agreed. Today i was sent a text with a link to 3's email client which i downloaded from their website, so now i can surf, listen to internet radio, well, pretty much everything i was doing before on the wireless. I don't have their Skype client, which apparently is not real Skype, but ISkoot (read this article: http://gigaom.com/2006/11/17/iskoot-not-skype-launched-on-symbian/ ). So far a happy user. I've been expecting this for a long time...

Hi guys, I've got the x-series software pack, i will upload it somewhere and put a link here shortly. I can confirm skype is working fine on my N80.

I have uploaded X-series software here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VRZHRAX4
I have installed skype on my N80 and it works fine. Call quality seems to be good. When someone rings you, the phone rings normally as if you would receive a phone call. Caller id says Skype Client Calling, or something like that.
Enjoy!

chears! it works on my n80 on three (i dont have x-series but i do have the 30mb internet thing). i was hoping to use it over wifi, but it doesnt seam to let me choose my connection -or can someone point me to the right option!?!

I beleive thats because this is the way that the networks are trying to make money out of VOIP, in other words, they know that we will try to use our phones with VOIP and of course they would like to charge us for it...

Tried Skype on the N80IE.... Its runs to the splash screen (displays Skype and the "Talk" logo. The press continue, and it just exits out back to the menu.

are you on 3, maybe it needs to see a 3 sim card installed, I tried it also and get the same as you ..

I'm on vodafone... Like you say, might have to be 3 customer.

Oh well, not like it is real Skype (uses the iSkoot gateway).

I am now trying to get the client direct from iskoot, they offer it as a beta for the Eseries (but you have to email and ask to get it).

edit: just tried a call out (on the three version) and it doesnt work it tells me to phone three! -doh. however it does receive calls fine.

For skype to work you have to be on Three. I have just noticed, when you place a call with skype, it rings a number, +447838333888. So it does not use the 3G internet connection to place the call. That is why you have to be on X-series plan from Three in order to be able to use this, i believe. And that is why they say that you have 5000 minutes of calls per month. This is the way they can track this.

yep and on an incomming call it comes in as an actual call, no doubt it uses voip on the bits inbetween tho (like webcalldirect etc)

kkll wrote:How the SKYPE of x-series work ?
i installed it but seem not work well

It will only work with the UK 3 network

kkll wrote:any skype n80 version released?
read the thread again it tells you what is and what isnt availiable!! I'm not going to retype it!

Accoriding to what sm1thson said, you don't have to be on X-series plan, the only thing is you have 3G internet connection.

anyone can confirm that??

Thank you..

need a 3g internet connection by three (vodaphone etc dont work)
without adding x-series you cant call out only receive skype calls.

iskoot (who made the program) do offer a beta that works with wifi etc for eseries phones, but you have to email and ask for it. (they havent replied yet so Ive not tested it).

I phoned 3 customer services today and asked for x-series silver. I told them I was using a Nokia 73 (although I am using an N80) and they told me that if I tried to use the services (Skype or Slingplayer) on another handset then I would be charged. I think this is more to do with them trying to sell Nokia n73's than anything else as I don't see how they would know.

Anyway he then told me I needed x-series gold in order to run the slingplayer, I told him I didn't mind experimenting with a fiver but ten quid for something I was not sure would work was something I would wait until next month to try. In all honesty I was not even sure anything would work for me given I have an N80.

Anyway he offered me upgrade to the gold for free for this month. I took it and installed the slingplayer and skype (link earlier in this thread)

My mate from Australia caled me on my moile skype and it worked perfectly, I had earlier been chatting on a usb phone with constant drop out while on my N80 it was as clear as any phone call I have made. You don't seem to be able to 'skype-out' which is a shame but I will have to convert some friends to skype now. I just wish I could get MSN for the N80 as well.

The slingplayer too works brilliantly and will come in very useful. The picture is small though, so you wouldn't want to watch it too long.

I'm actually considering getting rid of my N80 and getting a 73, although I'll probably wait for the N75

Yes I do have a slingbox, they are an amazing piece of kit and currently on offer all over the place. This could be due to the release of the Slingbox pro due soon or that they have just not been marketed properly.

I'm not sure I'll use this x-series gold after the first month, it is nice to be able to watch the slingbox on my phone but I work outside the UK mainly so will be using my PC for that, the same with Skype.

Hi, i was wondering if you was able to get the x-series software would it also be possable to get msn messenger live the same way cos there is no reason why that shouldn't work either?

I downloaded the x-series software from another forum, uploaded it on megaupload and posted it here, unfortunately i haven't run accross msn messenger live, i'm not using msn messenger, more yahoo messenger so i wasn't bothered by that.

I have a slingbox, so I tried to install the slingplayer you posted on this forum on my Nokia E60. It seems to install well, but I'm unable to test whether it actually works. I looks to me that the slingplayer wants to connect exclusively via three 3G service, so you cannot use wifi or other 3G data service instead. Can anyone confirm this observation?

Maybe they modified it especially for the Three network, or maybe it was designed for the Three network. Don't know for sure.

An interesting point re. N80 on X-Series on this thread at 3g.co.uk:
http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum//forum/thread/48667/
An employee of 3 in Bristol (who incidentally rates the N80 as one of the worst phones he's ever seen...) notes;
"It'd be no good on X Series, something that requires a lot of power to work." I think he means that the N80 battery life is insufficient to make use of the service... but I find that doubtful.
Mind you, I don't get my N80 from 3 until Tuesday! I'll let you know how it goes when I ask for X-Series...

Sorry to say Lupin that the battry is indeed sh*t ...you may get 24 - 48 hours normal use ...and maybe only 4 or 5 hours wifi use

That's what I heard - the question is, would that actually be a factor in using X-Series?
I hope to find out - but if anyone else uses X on N80, do share...

(BTW, I already ordered spare battery & pocket recharger! Plus I'm coming off using a Razr, so a nightly/binightly recharge is no big deal.)
