I am quite new to symbian phones and only got my N80 (o2) last week. I am interested in making VOIP calls etc . I have read lots of threads on these forums, ans i am a bit confused.
I have SIP Settings in my menu, but everybody says you cannot make VOIP calls without reflashing to the n80 IE. So whats the point of having SIP settings on the phone if you cant use them...or am i missing something ( i am new to this)
I am also nervous of reflashing my phone if i have to. What if it crashes , i have read that somebody reflashed using pheonix and it crashed...is rthe phone dead then , how do you get it back
and finally...what is the difference between SIP and VOIP?
thanks guys

I guess the first thing to check is whether you have the N80 Internet Edition or not. To check this, look in the main menu and look for a folder called 'Internet', if that is there you are all set to go VoIPing!
The 'standard' N80 has SIP settings just in case some software comes out for it that will allow VoIP. None exists yet (oh hang on I think truphone may support standard N80 now, so look at www.truphone.com).
Flashing your phone is a very risky procedure and not for the faint hearted. If you have never done this before and don't really have a clue about it, best bet is to read up on it as much as possible on these forums, read absolutely everything about flashing, it will help you understand and make a more informed choice about whether you are happy with the risks/legality (its not legal).
There is a possibility that you will destroy your phone for good by flashing incorrectly. It hasn't happened to me (I've done about 5 flashes in total on 2 different N80s), some people have flashed loads of never had a problem, some people have flashed the same firmware to two different N80s and one works and one breaks. I think it can be a bit of a shot in the dark. Personally I love the geeking of it all so I do it because I want the latest firmware etc and its worked so far, but I'm very careful and only use the latest tutorials and software.
I have read that it is possible to recover from a fecked phone, but I don't know how, you will have to keep reading the forums.
Check this thread for more flashing info (I didn't follow these instructions by the way on my N80, but it will give you an idea of what the deal is)
Good quiestion about VoIP/SIP, I'm not really sure. They are both fundamental to achieving a VoIP call, I would guess VoIP is the standard protocol, and SIP are the settings that allow it work. I'm sure someone else will correct me or improve on this answer.

Sip is the protocal that allows voice calls to be made over the internet (VOIP), from what I understand the N80 has the sip protocols but not an inbuilt way of using those protocols so you will only be able to use a thirp party app like TIVI (www.tivi.com) to utilise the sip functions on the N80 whereas the N80i does have an inbuilt way of allowing those protocols to be used, so essentially you ony really need some setting to make the N80i use the sip functions, also the benefit is that the use of internet calls is built in seamlessley into the N80i.
Obviously you have to register to a sip provider like truphone, or gizmo etc where you will get all the settings you need ( and in some cases a setup wizard)
Skyp on the other hand is a VOIP client that uses Peer 2 Peer and not sip, this restricts skype somewhat to commounications only between skype users (unless a third party intermediary program is used, but these are usually crap and not worth the effort)
The benefits with sip is that you can call anybody on any other sip network, but you cant call anybody on skype.
I hope thats clear...probably as clear as mud 😊..
ok thanks guys...very helpful so far, i am learning fast.
SO if i understand correctly, I should use SIP cos its better, and I can do this from my standard N80 with no reflash, as long as i sign up with somebody and get the settings???
The only downside, is that is won't be as 'seemless' / 'integrated' as doing it on the n80IE, but it will still work.
If i go this route, will Gizmo work on the standard N80 if i put the settings in manually with the SIP settings menu on the phone....and if so what are these settings. (I have tried dowenloading them using the wizard from gizmo, but it wont work, because i havn't got the N80ie...i assume u can do manually)
thanks so far really helpful...
oh yer...and if you use gizmo oir truephone, can you do video calls to a pc?
...and the end of the day, all i want to do is make video cals to a pc (plus the odd free call usiing VOIP /SIP 😊
the only sip provider I know that works on the N80 is tivi, gismo wont work
Tivi is the only sip client also that allows video calls from your N80.....
Try this first, you can also call other sip users on other sip networks with tivi
I also dont think its as simple as just putting in a few sip settings on the N80 also if you want to use Gismo
and if you want to upgrade your N80 to N80 i then the only way you will do this is by yourself or you know somebody to do it for you, Nokia WONT do it, not yet but that may change, but its a BIG may
You won't be able to use Gizmo or anything like that on normal N80 because you would need a seperate client to run on the phone, which doesn't exist. The N80IE has the client built in, so you can just enter the settings. The only program I know of that has a client for N80 is TIVI, and maybe truphone, who say they now support N80.
Also check out www.talkonaut.com it has a program for Series 60 3rd Edition which does VoIP and lots of other features.
Gizmo and truphone do not support video calling. TIVI and Talkonaut do. (I haven't tried Talkonaut yet though)
If you can get Talkonaut or TIVI to work ok, then you are sorted. Check the Truphone site and sign up and they shouuld be able to send you a client for your phone also.
If any of those work, then the only difference in flashing will be that you don't have a seperate program to run to use VoIP - with N80IE, if you receive a VoIP call the phone rings just like an ordinary call and you can add VoIP numbers to contacts in ordinary phone book, which is quite groovy

to use tivi you have to open it like a program and it has its own phonebook etc and you make your calls from within the tivi app, using gizmo and truphone you can use the inbuilt phonebook on your phone and just select internet call to make the VOIP call
