N73 - Tomtom 6 map lag when voice active

54 replies · 32,294 views · Started 09 December 2006

Firstly I have the latest tomtom 6 and gb map version and the latest v3 (ME) firmware on my N73.

I have tomtom 6 installed on the phone internal memory and the maps and other gubbins on a 2gb memory card. All POI's are disabled (very sluggish in general if any are enabled), apart from I have the speed cams db on warn.

It runs fine apart from the fact the voices make the map freeze while they are playing, also the voices themselves are very sluggish, eg 'IN 300......pause........YARDS........pause..........TURN.......pause........LEFT'.

This is a complete nightmare in a city centre as the phone keeps falling well behind where I am on the road.

I should add that I don't think its a slow memory card at fault here as it will calculate lands end to john o groats in 27secs which is nice going in my book.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible to reduce the bitrate of voices? Would that even help? Thanks.

Hmmmm.... Well, i have TTN6 running on my N73 ME with no problems whatsoever. In my experience with TomTom on Symbian devices, problems either occur with bad installs or Bluetooth bandwidth delay. For example, on my 6680, if I turned my Bluetooth headset on before TomTom had started and hooked up with the GPS, the map would lag behind. I also noticed some voice issues with TTM5 Version 5.2 when using the PocketGPS Speed Camera Database.

But on my N73, everything works brilliantly. It's smooth, accurate and a joy to use. My advice would be to do a clean install and make sure you have plenty of Phone Memory free.

Other than that, I can't be of much more help.

Good Luck 😊

Thanks for the reply; the phone is new, with no other apps installed, definitely nothing wrong with the install, I mean hat could there be? Copy some files and run the sis. Bluetooth is not a prob as it will do it running the demo route.

Funnily enough a friend just came round and it does exactly the same on this phone, with a completely different memory card.

I will say its quite a subtle problem which only shows under heavy load, try a demo at 400%+ speed and see if the screen updates stay the same when the voice kicks in.

Tried that and it still works fine for me.

I have the same problem when using TT6 on my N73. The voices are not slow but whenever they are heard the 3d map freezes and then has to jump to catchup.

I've tried this on a different memory card and also on a friends N73 with the same results.

I'm using a SanDisk Ultra II 2gb Mini SD on a N73 with the ME firmware installed.

Do you have any other Bluetooth devices attached ?

Also, have you tried contacting TomTom support ? What did they say, if anything ?

The voices themselves aren't slowed down, but there are noticeable pauses between them compared to previous tomtom versions I've used.

The funny thing is that I have since tried a 3rd N73 and 2 work mates N80's all do exactly the same, and reading on the pocketgps + nokia support forum other people are reporting the same.

Looks like a tomtom bug to me so I've stopped trying to fix it myself....shame I wasted money on another memorycard trying to fix it in the first place.

It's really strange. I have an N73 and TomTom Navigator 6 running beautifully smooth. The problems you are having sound similar to problems I was having with TomTom Mobile 5 on my 6680. On that I would experience lots of issues, like stuttering voices, map lag and chipmunk speed camera warnings !

All that I can think of is that it's a memory issue. How much free phone memory have you got ? I'm running with about 29MB of free phone memory. The other option is that it's an incompatibility issue with the phone's firmware. What version are you running ? I'm on the Music Edition (3.0638.0.0.30 - MUSIC EDITION 30-10-2006 RM-133).

Other than that I'm stumped.

I'm assuming this is a legitimate version of TomTom ? If so, have you contacted their Customer Support ?

Good luck 😊

I'm running the same version of ME firmware in my phone and have 33mb of free phone memory. No other apps are open yet the map display pauses whenever a voice is heard.

A friend I know did not think he had this problem but has since confirmed that he does.

If everyone who has this installed could please run a demo route at 100% speed and report here if the display freezes during voice prompts then that would be great.

It might also be helpful to note other details, such as phone firmware version, make and model of Blutooth GPS device, TomTom version number, other apps installed/running, other devices connected, etc, etc.

All of this could help isolate a common trend with those that are experiencing the problem.

Ultimately though, you should contact TomTom support.

I too have the very same problem with lag when the voice instructions are on, so I did some investigating myself...

I'm on the standard V3... firmware on the N73 (not the ME or IE versions), and when TT6 was running, the map froze while the voice was coming on, and then it would catch up, pretty damn annoying really.

So what i did the other day was to reset the phone to factory settings, and reinstalled TT6 again, this time there is a slight pause when the voice instruction starts, but the map kicks in while the instruction is being voiced.

Its not perfect, but better than before. I've tried two different GPS Units, so its not a GPS receiver problem. I only have the Safety Camera POI's enabled, no other apps running in background (double checked with Taskman), so I'm putting it down to TomTom.

I've read somewhere that that its because the N73 isn't supported yet by Tomtom, also that it works well on the N80 because the processor is faster than the N73, so perhaps we'll have to just sit tight till the N73 is officially supported?

Hey Lovesign have you got the tomtom software loaded on the phone memory or card, because I too have this pause problem and I have tomtom on the phone and maps and other stuff on the memory card. Maybe they should all be on the memory card?

I have tomtom navigator 6 (6.010) with map version 660.1199 and have pocketgps camera POIs running same time. No othe apps running. Original N73 firmware (no ME or IE edition)

I have everything on the card. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the speed of the memory card is causing these peoples delays.

If you stick it all on the memory card it does the same as well.

I've made this issue my personal crusade to find a phone it doesn't do it on, my brother runs a debranding service online and out of the countless phones I have tried this on (this includes N80's as well) I have yet to see one which worked properly.

I also been in contact with forum users who claim it works ok with them, but when we actually get down to trying to work out whats up with mine it becomes obvious they have the same issue anyway.

I've personally come to the conclusion it does it on every single phone out there bar lovesign's obviously.

Okay that sounds like a lead, im going to re-install the program on the memory card (i have a sandisk 1GB card) and see what happens. Although the pause in the map wasnt a problem for me untill i read it on here! If i cant get it smooth i can live with it!

Maybe we'll just have to wait for a product version upgrade from tomtom.

Nah, I have tried a range of them, all of which I benchmarked in a cardreader with sisoft sandra before hand. The problem is identical be it on the slowest card to the all singing all dancing x150 SLC sammy Nand card.

Well, then it must be down to the fact that it isn't officially supported on the N73. Either that or there is a conflict with another piece of software.

TomTom6 IS OFFICIALLY supported on the N73, the status changed a few weeks ago. So I would think the best people to sort out the "Map lag" problem are TomTom. Those experiencing the lag with legitimate software should inform product support.

Sorry but I haven't got the required ten posts to make a proper link.

Indeed.

anyone else made any progress with this?

im having the exact same problems although i have to ask lovesign is this the official tomtom nav6 installed from dvd onto a memory card or was it already on memory card

ill come clean mine erm isnt COUGH the real erm deal 😃

should i try the official? and if it doesnt work can send it back?

Well, I have this problem too.
Ive tried 2 phones with various firmware and product codes,
Tried Various maps,
Tried Various Cracked copies,
Tried an original,
Tried formatting the memory card in with the phone and with the computer,
Tried POI on and off.

Guess what? Still the same no matter what.

Just a thought but does anyone have the F-Prot Anti Virus enabled ? Could be this causing the lag ??

:con?

I dont have anti virus on my phone, Ive uninstalled everything, The phone is as it was when it came and the only thing on the memory card is the TTN6 and 3 maps

Surely Tom Tom have an answer. Okay I know there support pages are pants but has anyone emailed them ?

Although last time I did about the TomTom One they just told me to reinstall the sofware, that age old "fix"

Installed TT6 on my mobile but not got a GPS to test it yet so be interested to see what happens with mine.

You can test it without a GPS receiver, Go to a>b planning make up a route the demo it
