hi all,
this is my first post here at aas. I hope this is a good forum to help me use my E61 better.
First question: Is there sw or a hack to display whether I am connected with edge or with a standard gprs connection. My operator in Bkk claims they have edge everywhere but it seems awfully slow mostly.

i agree... i wish it would say if your conenct to EDGE..like it says if your connected to 3G
I've found the opposite. I'm setting up an E50 for the wife's Christmas present (don't worry, she doesn't read this), and I've found that when the display shows the symbol for standard GPRS it's actually much faster than I'd expect; I suspect it's actually using EDGE. It's supposed to have a slightly different symbol for EDGE, but I've not seen it yet.
how would the symbol be different?

According to the E50 manual, the symbol for GPRS is like an old British Rail logo with an aerial growing out of it. The EDGE symbol is the same BR thing with a capital "E".
Yes. On my e50, I get the 'E' symbol on top of the usual signal symbol. Mostly it is an E (since my operator is enabled for EDGE) but some places where it is weak, I do not get the E and it is definitely much slower.
Ok, I checked the E61 manual and unfortunately it specifies the same symbol for both GPRS and EGPRS connections...
Can we hack the E50 symbol to an E61?
Actually I'm on the old AT&T Network with my E61...
The way I tested the speed is DSLReports Mobile Speed Test:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
I registered 1849kbit/sec -- which is around 240K/sec. Definitely EDGE.
1,849kbits/s is definitely NOT EDGE as the maximum is 384kbits/s. Either you were using a WLAN or the speed test is inaccurate! I got 310kbits/s with 3G!
talking about symbols .. i had the most wierdest thing happen yesterday.
i was at my factory & i dont get very good signal there, when i'm outside the cabin, i get about 2-3 bars & inside i dont get network. but the funny thing is that when i dont get network, my E61 shows the 3G symbol & when i get network the 3G symbol dissapears. Is'nt that wierd.
Anyways i know AIRTEL in Mumbai supports EDGE, but if i'm connect at EDGE Speeds or normal GPRS Speeds, there is no way to tell apart from the speed or browsing.
