Haha, I love this one...
For the purposes of... cough... warranty. I had to find a way of getting the Orange firmware back onto my N73, and make it look authentic, not just the theme or whatever.
I tried first things first, changed product code back, went to NSU.
"...if you'd like, NSU can re-install the firmware currently on the handset?"
Brilliant! Orange release FW3, I discover this was done back in end October, they're keeping up to speed?
Anyway, reflashed, rebooted.
Homescreen is gone. Simple as that.
The original Nokia active standby glared at me... The icons and theme were Orange, but everything is present and correct!
Customer services tells me Orange had major problems with customisations added to the phone, and that they've been "fixed" =D
Is this Orange finally admitting to their mistakes: that the homescreen is utter bollocks? Looks like it, seeing as the N73 is also now back for sale on their website. OH, also upon further looking, they've added a 3D demo of Tomb Raider: Legends on here (Symbian format...)
Are we seeing the start of the "new generation of gaming phones"?
Thought I'd share all this, hope my "update" didn't go wrong and that Orange REALLY have removed their shite :icon14:
So does that mean, you can have the official orange firmware, and it looks like the generic firmware ........ or am I mis-understanding .... ?
My friend also confirms this, and he did not debrand:
Orange have taken their homescreen off the latest firmware up (V3) of the N73...
They have left Nokia's own active standby app.
So yeah, you can now pretty much convert Orange > Nokia without flashing, just change the theme and remove the gay applications and whatever.
Yes I updated my Orange N73 this weekend without changing the product code. The Homescreen is gone but it doesn't seem any faster to be honest
The only other thing I noticed is the icons are a bit prettier and the volume on the music player is not as loud
Still no snooze interval configuration - I want to snooze it for 10 mins not 5 ! and still no repeatable alarms - ho hum. Seems quite stable though
A firmware update does not introduce any new S60 features, so you'll never see things like a snooze interval or repeatable alarms, unless you get a new device based on a newer S60 version with such features added there.
Firmware updates are usually only for fixing issues with the previous version, and not for releasing new functionality.

Hi Chall5
I upgraded my Orange phone this weekend and it's much faster than with firmware version 2.0628.0.0.3. Particularly when opening "Contacts" there is no pregnant pause; it used to be a case of waiting for a couple of seconds or more and then when typing in letters to search for a contact it was horribly slow. Keypad and joystick aside, this phone is now excelent.

I'm keen to upgrade too but find the music player volume not that great on firmware V2. How much does V3 reduce this please?
My feeling is that the speaker / headset volume is slightly louder in the v3 firmware than in the v2 firmware.
