Running the NSU to update to ME, Got about 2/3rds of the way through and errors out "There was a problem updating the software. Retry or Cancel".
Now i've got nothing. Dead phone. NSS won't write a different code to try a different update to bring it back.
I'm a bit stuffed here. Any pointers? Will Pheonix fix it? If so where can i find it?
Thanks for your help.
A Phoenix Box will most likely fix it.
It's a lot of money though, but in the long run it means that any Nokia phone you get you can mess around with...
It's fun.
Just called Orange.
"yeah, my 3 day old phone has just died".
"ok, we'll send you out a new one by courier tomorrow"

That's the way to do it 😊 Most companies realise you are more valuable to them when you have a working phone and are utilising the network. It may be a refurbished device, but it will be a working one 😊
C**p, it did it again! Exact same thing. Partway through the update you hear the USB connection drop then come back. The update fails then the phone is bricked.
Different USB cable, different USB port. Huh?
Got a new one coming tomorrow (again!). The woman at Orange was trying to talk me out of another N73 as they are having huge problems with them. In fact she said the only reason i got one is because i went through The Link to get it. Orange HAVE pulled them. I'm beginning to think she may be right.
I have (had?) a spare N73 as The Link originally sent me two by accident. I'm still waiting on shipping labels to send it back, so i thought WTH, i'll try that one too.
Brand new N73, straight out of the box, trying an unchanged product code on NSU.
Result.
Dead.
Makes me think the problem is on my end, but i can't see how. I've no problems with my broadband, i've been leeching for days no problem, so the connections up. I did an update when i first got the first phone, and it went fine. But since then it just falls over, ME OR "normal" updates.
I've ugraded A835's, E1000's, and K750i's, and downgraded and upgraded PSP's, so i'm not a complete noob.
But this one is pissing me off. Maybe i should have gone with a K800 after all?
I had to drown a N73 after it failed to update!! updated the new one in the end!!! I forgot the first time to switch off all firewalls and charge fully and leave charger in!!....
Very wierd :frown:
Mine worked first time. I would tend to agree that something is not quite right between the phone and NSU, but so difficult to pinpoint.
Oh well, at least they are sending another 😊
Worked perfectly first time for me although I have read reports from several Orange branded N73 owners stating that they have had problems. Perhaps the Orange firmware has caused these? My sim free N73 on original Nokia firmware works great.
OK, update:
I HADN'T bricked the spare phone, but it took a LONG press on the power button to get it to start up after i tried to update it the first time.
So i tried a regular OEM (0541149) update on it. It worked.
Then i tried a ME update.
IT WORKED!
HUH? Perhaps they should call the software the "Nokia crap shoot" or "Nokia roulette"
I'll try it on the new phone when it shows up.
Keep us informed, it's an interesting saga 😊
The new phone showed up, i stuck the sim and charged battery in there. Did the same as earlier, OEM update, then ME update.
...
IT WORKED! I now have an ME N73.
I have no idea why it bricked twice before. It may have been something on my PC, so to rule out any problems this time i cold booted my PC (both times), rebooted the phone(s) after changing the product code and re-ran NSS to make sure the new number had stuck, THEN ran the ME update, and had nothing else running while it ran.
Thanks to everyone for their help. Cheers.
On a side note, the courier pissed me off. He picked up the old phone, still in its box with everything that came with it. Later i saw the box, with the CD and manuals dumped on the pavement outside. He had taken all the hardware and cables to return them and dumped the rest. Sashole!

Yay !! Excellent news. Seems like a methodical, almost pedantic install process might just be the answer 😊

What a knob ! Report him for littering ! 😊
