E61 Memory Card Hidden Data Copy

Hi,

I have just bought a new 1Gb memory card for my E61. This works fine other than I have now lost my Extra programs supplied with the phone (Worldmate, Acrobat etc). I have found that they are on the original card supplied with the phone in hidden directories (visible only on the PC cardreader), but I cannot copy them accross to the new card.

I have tried copying both on the phone itself and on my PC with no luck also using "backup". I get all the other files but it will not transfer the hidden files.

Any ideas?

Go to the E61 support page on the Nokia web site, download the instal files (sis files) for all the software that were on the bundled memory card and install them on your new memory card.

Unfortunatly only the Zip Manager is on the Nokia site as a free download, I also have Worldmate, Golf, Acrobat supplied free with the phone.

There's Golf too: http://europe.nokia.com/A4149166

Strange though, it looks like they've removed Worlmate. Use the E70 version, should be the same one anyway: http://europe.nokia.com/A4151183

As for the PDF reader, it's on the N80 support page: http://europe.nokia.com/A4149142

As a general rule, if a software is not on the E61 support page for some reason, download it from the support page of another S60 3rd edition device. Same OS, same software.

Thanks,

I loaded all the missing progs again, much easier than trying to copy the hidden files. They also don't seem to be hiden anymore, so I don't know what the point was in the first place.

All sorted, thanks for the suggestion.

David

Although I have got the files from the website and sorted the problem, can you please tell me what the "Nokia Catalogue" is and how to access it?

Yes, you're right, silly me, even though that's what i used to restore these apps when i did my firmware upgrade, i had completely forgotten about it.

To dlightfoot: the Catalogs application can be found in the tools folder of your menu. It gives you a list of free and commercial applications available for your phone and allows you to download and install them in just a click. A really cool concept and it works very well but the list of applications currently available through Catalogs is very limited. Obviouly, you'll need either wifi access or a flat-rate data plan to download the apps or you'll be charged by your operator for the downloads.

I found that copying from the original 64MB card to a new 2GB card did not work with the Nokia software, but just using Windows and a card reader to copy the files worked fine. It saves the hassle of reinstalling the software!

BTW if you want a seriously good file manager for S60 which allows you to see and copy EVERYTHING, you should download and install this:

http://sysexplorer.newlc.com/project

WARNING: This allows you to bugger around with everything in memory and on memory card. Proceed with extreme caution 😊

SysExplorer doesn't have "AllFiles" capability, so it will not let you see and copy "EVERYTHING" on Symbian 9 based devices (like the Eseries devices).

And "EVERYTHING" would also require TCB capability in addition to AllFiles.

All directories protected by Symbian Platform Security/datacaging:

\sys (AllFiles capability allows reading, TCB capability needed to modify)
\resource (TCB capability needed to modify)
\private (AllFiles to access + apps can see their own subdirectory)

you are right. It can see resource, but I can't see private or sys.

Is there anything useful in these folders to look at ?
Can you recommend a file explorer that can see them (I presume they are in the phone memory and not on the card) ?

rgds

There is no file explorer with the required capabilities to see them (I don't think any developer has received AllFiles/TCB to use with a file manager).

The catalogue does not appear in the tools menu or anywhere else on the Vodafone E61.

I will download it and install from the Nokia website.
